But he's got double standards at work whereby Chelsea fans are allowed to express their disappointment and Brighton fans not. I'm afraid that's not how a crowd works, a crowd will do what a crowd will do. The history lesson comment was totally aimed at the fans and was snarky. Nothing remotely in it that suggests he was serious or that it was from humility.
My point is, it's repeatedly stated that he said "Brighton fans need a history lesson": he didn't. If you're telling me that it wasn't taken deadly seriously by the Brighton fanbase, I'd suggest reading all 48,359,202 comments on here that appear to be taking him very, very seriously and are mortally wounded by the mere suggestion.

well you’re free to interpret that as being self effacing if you want, but i think most read it as what he intended and that was a snidely swipe at the fans.
He was suggesting just that. He was saying he knew the history of the club, we shouldn't have such high expectations and that maybe Brighton fans were unaware of our previous lowly status. It's called inference.
