[Albion] Potter on why he played a young team

I am not so sure about that as I wonder what the mental affect may be on the youngsters in the short to long term hence I have deliberately avoided naming any that I considered a failure and only highlighted the ones that I think stood out. Would self doubt creep into the reckoning. due to the result?

I think it quite likely that it could do them almost as much harm as good. Lambs to the slaughter was the phrasde l used in an earlier post, and l stand by it.

Those young kids needed guidance on the field from more senior players, not just Shane Duffy who seemed quite exasperated by it all.

If we had played a reasonably experienced team and beaten the Villa would not that have given us a better chance there at Chelsea. Ok there was a chance of injury but these guys pick up injuries in training don't they, and they still train, they have to. Footballers need to play games and Mooy, Biss. need game time.

Which rarely happens. Occasionally you get the magic of the cup, but it is magic because it's rare.

I'm not talking about shocks. I'm talking about competitive matches - a reasonable expectation if you're paying to watch a cup game.

I'd say 'throwing' a match, as the Albion did on Wednesday, is rare.

Yes they do.

No doubt Potter's hand was slightly forced in that it looks like we only have 17 fit players for Chelsea anyway - and that includes Connolly, Alzate and Băluţă.

Maybe 18 or 19 if Schelotto and Jahanbakhsh are fit.

Needs must.

True story. Brighton fielded a much stronger team in 18/19, 17/18, 16/17 - and lost in round 2/3/3, scoring an average of 0,3 goals per game going out.

I'm sure the people paying £15 went home with a smile on their face - "son, we may have lost today - but at least we got to see Suttner, Jahanbakhsh and Locadia".

You really don't '' have the ear '' of the guy you are supporting do you. As you don't seem to have a clue what may have gone on internally. Otherwise you wouldn't be opening him up to this scrutiny and keeping it going.

STOP TALKING SENSE. There is no place for it here. Can’t wait to BOOOOO Potter tomorrow for not respecting the Caramac Cup by not playing Andrew Crofts.

Really? We’re that worried for them? They lost 3-1 and hit the bar. It was hardly a trouncing and they got to play at the AMEX for the first team against some decent players. Isn’t that exactly what they hoped for when they signed the contract?

My bet. You’re MILES from the truth and actually, they’re all dead excited about being given the opportunity. If you want to worry about a group of players go and put your arm around Fornals, wilshere, Snodgrass, Haller, Zabaletta, Anderson and Noble who got a far bigger pasting from Oxford.

I dont really get what you are trying to say.

If its like you say - I am "opening him up for scrutiny", people are just doing the "guilt by association" thing against him through listening to some random guy on a forum and if people are that helplessly braindead its not really my problem. I'm also not a zombie - there is reasons I dig Potter as a human and manager but that dont mean I will act differently to make people like him more or less, it just means I will agree with him on a lot of topics (like the value of the Cabbalah Cup at this stage and in this situation).

Also, a lot more people than I first thought seems to share my opinion so its obviously not completely from a different planet.

I’m glad he gave the young lads a chance, he’ll know now who can cut it and who still needs to improve when thrown in at the deep end. With all the injuries we might need some of these kids and at least they’ve had a taste of what to expect. I can understand the disappointment that we lost and that the fans who attended didn’t get to see the first team but long term they may have witnessed what could be a very important game for the development of the club.

Scenario 3 Some players were genuinely unavailable. Others were not. A better balance COULD have been found, but we chose to write off the game.

I like Potter. I think he is going to prove a very good appointment for the club, but this line-up went too far. IMO it was a mistake, and to patronise us, by even trying to justify it just compounds the mistake.

Spot On!

The bottom line is you should set up every game with a team that can compete and win! Surely it's more beneficial to concentrate on a small number of youth players you think can progress through the ranks, rather than the numbers that were involved on Wednesday night.

Do you post as much on the Swansea forum?

That's because I don't really want to spell it out
because I would need to expand on other things which I chose not to, so won't dwell on this exchange any more. Good Luck

But if/when the lads get a chance of first team football it won't be the same set-up as Wednesday night. You'd be playing with 8/9 senior players so making any assumptions about Wednesday night can't be guaranteed. Seeing how the players integrate into the senior team like Connolly & Alzate have done this year is a much better indication.

By all means blood two or three young players in cup ties such as this, but not a complete team of them!, add in a few squad players, and two or three regular first teamers at the very least.

It was totally unfair on the youngsters not to include a few more players with first team experience, (yes l know we allegedly had injury problems), and the poor kids were rudderless.

Very much this.

Absolutely nothing wrong with drafting a handful of academy players into the squad for one of these fixtures. But by fielding almost an entire team of them, they'll have learned precious little by getting given the runaround from a half-paced PL team.

INTEGRATION is the key, not "sink or swim". They needed to be alongside more of our senior pro's and some fringe players so we could actually stand a chance of making a game of it.
