So many to choose from....

But 'Move On Up' by Curtis Mayfield is one of my best songs of all time, though it is far tooooo common if I wanna remain credible. Slightly less common stuff that I love, The Cooperatives and 'Everything's wrong' and Carl Carlton with 'Competition Aint Nothing', for the mod-ier end it's got to be The Quik with 'Berts Apple Crumble'.

I can well imagine.

He probably had one of the worst jobs in pop - standing behind Marc Almond, having prime viewing sight of his arse and, in moments of having his mind wander - wondering what on earth had been up there recently.

:nono:

He got chased out of that club outside brighton on the motorway one night by by a mob that didnt appreciate a tolerant society haha.
Cant remember the name of the place now, always forgetting it..although im stoned, and heading out for a drink with an ex porn star, so mind is wandering a bit, even though she is just a mate.

What a ripper of a thread folks - dance music of the gods IMHO.

God bless you daveinprague, NSC would be a far soulless place (no pun intended, honestly) without you dude.

Far too many tunes to list for my fave Northern footstompers but if you are after a compilation to rival all others I don't reckon you can go past "Feet Start Dancin", one of those wicked themed cassettes the NME sold in the 80's. I got a recording engineer mate to upload it onto CD for me years ago and I'm on my 3rd copy now as I've flogged the bugger so hard.
It includes amongst its 40 gems the stonecold belters SLOW FIZZ by The Sapphires (which I actually bought "for my daughter" for Christmas when she was 4, her first record, ahhhhh), SOUL SYMPHONY (who needs words) by Sons of Moses and the hilarious YOUR LITTLE SISTER by The Marvelows.

I know that purist Northern Soul has to be old 45's from the US that never even sniffed the charts at the time of release, but I reckon there's a few mainstram soul tunes that have captured the Northern sound and feel down pat - my two standouts being Green Onions (whcih I always start my FSS soul review sets with) and Love Really Hurts Without You (yes, by no other than Billy Ocean).

We have a cracking Northern Soul Night here in WA once a month at the Fly By Night Club in Freo (full of geezers needless to say) and I think they do one at the Irish Club in Subi too.....

Keep The Faith!

...

Wow, that's impressive. I missed that the first time round.

Shouldn't there be some sort of NSC honours for Dave? The man is a veritable god of the turntable.

Not sure if it counts as a bona fide northern soul tune, but it is a classic all the same.

Booker T & The MG's - Time is tight.

Also.

Edwin Starr's - Breaking down the walls of heartache.
