[Albion] Post-match reaction - yet again an awful referee has cost us

The lack of pace was definitely a big issue. Leeds played a very high line and squeezed the space in midfield and we had no one who could run in behind their defence.
Bruno wasn't at the races and whilst Calde had a good second half he is not a long term solution for the left back vacancy.
Whilst we only played in fits and starts we had the chances to win the game. Crofts and Buckley should have done better with their chances.
I think Augustein is going to be class once he is match fit.

We have got one monkey off of our shoulder from last season of going ahead first and not losing (although not a bad monkey). Just need to sort out the other monkey now, going behind first and winning. I can see less draws this year as OG looks to turn 1-1s like today into wins with attacking substitutions. Sometimes they will work and we will win 2-1, sometimes we will lose 2-1 like today.

I went to the game today, we deserved to loose. All of our players were slow on and off the ball, and we has no width.

Just got back.

Not our greatest performance by any standards. But we were more than in the game, against a Leeds side that probably played at its best. We had our chances, but failed to take them. The handball on TV is obvious. Unfortunately, the ref doesnt have that benefit. I cant see how he could disallow the goal, if he saw no infringement. And to a person no one in the crowrd saw it until the action replay.

If we were worried about left back, then we neednt have. Calderon had a fantastic match. Infact it was at right back where we were poor. Bruno had a very poor game. On this performance we need a left back, so that Calderon can move back to right back.

I agree with the fitness issue. We did look knackered. Not sure if that was down to carrying an injury during pre season in Bridders case or a poor pre season in Spanish Dave and Kemys case.

Although clearly not match fit, Kemy looked a very good player. Strong on the ball, with an eye for a good pass. But we did lack pace up front, not helped by having no wingers for first 60 mins.

Overall, although I would have preferred to win today, the performance showed promise. At times we played some excellent stuff, just let down by numerous misplaced passes (Bruno and Bridders). Hopefully over the coming weeks these things will work themselves out.

First games of the season say nothing. We should know that by now, cos if they did, we would have won the league last season.

Not sure I agree about the handball having seen it on the telly, but this tallies far more with all the independent reports I've read. Seems to be a fair bit of over-the-top doom and gloom.

I thought we played pretty well. Not much worse than the same game last season which we won late on.

Main difference was no Bridge. Whilst Calderon did his best on the left he is not a left back and as for Bruno, that has to be the worst game he has had in a long time.

As for the others, Upson and Greer looked as though they struggled for pace at time but were otherwise solid.

The lack of pace we had was clear and Lua Lua could I feel have made a real difference if he had started.

But overall we didn't deserve to lose or win.

Leeds will be top six this year though so nothing to worry about yet, but signing a left back has to a propriety .

Do you really think Leeds will be in the top six? A Leeds fan on the train home said that today was better than any performance they had under Warnock. I cant see them finishing top six. I'd put them around mid table based on the direct football they showed today.

Good manager, a crowd now behind them. Home form alone will get them very close.

Leeds - but not the dirty bit

Not sure I can agree with that, I couldn't see where they would improve on their performance, a somewhat direct and brute force approach.
on the other hand I can see plenty of areas where we will improve as the players get used to the system, get match fit and OG works out who to play. Time will tell though.

Oh and they really did try to take advantage of our supposed problems at left back, the vast majority of their attacks went down that route. I can see the same happening in future matches until it is no longer seen as a weakness.

The ref sounded like he had a reasonable game from the radio commentary, not that I had a clue what was going on though, thanks to the totally inept commentary. Apparently the ref was unsighted for the alleged handball, things like that happen.

This, if I did my job as badly as the radio commentators do theirs. I'd be fired.

I think one of the first comments from WA was, I have in my notes we need to be positive going forward.

Must have spent hours researching that. Needs to be a couple of ins and outs on the radio team.

I thought Leeds were poor and we should have had at least a draw. We let them get too many crosses in which put us under pressure occasionally but I can't see them being anything other than mid table on that performance.

2-1 to the referee. Why is the standard of refereeing so poor in the Championship? Terrible today for both sides.

How a referee can not see a blatant handball by one of their scummy players and then has the nerve to card the players who hound him at the end for his terrible decision is truly amazing.

For what it's worth we looked really poor and disinterested in winning the game, looks like it could be a long hard season a head, especially with joke officials in the league.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

So easy to blame refs.

If I don't take your chances and don't see games out its recipe for defeat...

A mixed performance, some positive signs alongside some disappointingly sluggish and sloppy play.

It seems to me that we intend to pass teams into submission, which is a good thing as Oscar clearly would like this done at a quicker tempo than Gus. The best example of this being the goal which was just superb. However on the negative side I'd say the team as a whole looked ring rusty, I'm hoping the next couple of games get us up to speed. Some of the chasing back wasn't too great and some of the passing was wayward.

The biggest problem the team had was at fullback, given that we only have bruno, calde and max as specialists this is the most urgent need for team strengthening.

Overall we were good enough for a point in a tough environment yesterday. We are still quite a way from being the finished article and I think Oscar has plenty to sort out, but give him time and I am confident he will.

Disappointing result but no need to panic just yet. The left back issue is obvious so will need sorting asap. Wonder if we'll see Maxi at LB against Derby and Calde switched to RB until Bruno gets sharper? The big positive is having Ulloa from the start of the season. With our more attacking style I can see him being up there with the division's top scorers. Once the fitness levels are up, after what was a shortened and rushed pre-season, I can see us creating many more chances for our forwards this season. As others have said, think it's going to be exciting, def less draws.

Can we stop blaming the ref whenever we lose or draw this season?

If you think the ref cost us spare a thought for Sheffield Wednesday.

They should have had 2 penalties and Barton sent off.

Barton was actually walking to the tunnel when Zamora had to stop him as somehow the ref didn't give it.

Sorry, what on earth are you on about? We were SUPERB last season and finished FOURTH, second half of the season we were the SECOND best team in the league. We were far more than "good enough" last season.

my point being we didn't go up, so we weren't good enough ,
