Unfortunately too late - Brexiteers' scare-mongering convinced everyone they were a shoe-in for EU membership next week.

They could well have been a "shoe-in", seemed a fairly stable Muslim country, now seems like they could end up like the other warring Muslim countries.

Will need to watch developments to see if the army have the support it needs as the most resent Coups have failed, the next day or so could be huge not only for Turkey but Europe and the Middle East lots of interested parties will be watching From the sidelines

i would speculate, at this early stage and with an admittedly sketchy knowledge, that the coup is to maintain stability and Turkey's secular tradition.

Allah be praised

Sounds like something quite different...

You obviously don't understand Turkish history.

Army steps in when the Government gets too religious or extremist. They wear non religion of the state (a separation) like a badge of honour since the state was born on such.

A lot we could learn actually what with the Queen being the head coach of the vicars,

Stable muslim country as in theyve murdered all the non muslims and are now working their way through regionally ethnicities.

The BBC expert on the news is saying that he has information that this coup will probably prevail.

That sounds about right - the army is a strongly secular force, a bulwark maintaining the Ataturk tradition and, ironically, might be the best hope for maintaining a secular democracy with freedom of speech.

erdogan on way to Germany apparently, they wont let him land in Istanbul...

Mental stuff.

I wonder if that German comedian will still have to stand trial for insulting Erdogan?

And it's worth repeating what our current Foreign Secretary wrote about Erdogan:

There was a young fellow from Ankara,
was a terrific wankerer.
Till he sowed his wild oats,
With the help of a goat,
But he didn’t even stop to thankera.

Cracking stuff!
