Portsmouth Wound up tomorrow wed?

Got something to say or just want fewer pesky ads? Join us... 😊

It needs saying though and I agree with him. And, like you say, we ENDURED the shit. We didn't try (too much) to spend money we didn't have in order to maintain a too-high league position - despite many calls on here for Knight to 'open his chequebook'.

Football needs a big club to go bust and re-form, preferably several. Not llittle, insignificant ones like Aldershot, Accrington, Chester or even Brighton, but a decent-sized one like Portsmouth. I truly believe it's the 'least worse' option for football in general as the financial problems aren't going to solve themselves.

Perhaps you are correct that a big club needs to go bust so that football may take a good hard look at itself. The thing that I didn't like about Albion Dan's post was this:

In fact if they go under it massively widens our catchment all the way to the West Sussex/Hampshire border.

That sounds just like Premier League profiteering to me.

As much as its not nice to see fans lose their club I think that we may have to let Palace, Portsmouth & Cardiff go so that everyone learns an important lesson from this.

Clubs should not be owned by organisations or individuals that want to either make money or egos out of supporters passions.

Its why glory hunting is wrong

I get the distinct impression watching SSN that they are almost disappointed Pompey haven't been wound up. A sense of anti-climax almost for their top story.

Oh give over, all that will happen is they have to start again down in the lower leagues (heaven forbid as low as we are). The very worst that will happen is they start again under the name Mouth of Port FC or something. They'll still be there, playing football on some local rec somewhere locally (if they really love their club). As Albion Dan says, Brightons catchment could extend into Bognor, and onwards, at their expense.
DOWN I say.

There is no guarantee that if they went out of business that they would reform, have you got a crystal ball?

Yeah, fair comment on the catchment area quote. It's a bit like when we were struggliung and Charlton started trying to encroach in our territory.

Brighton factually.....
Earliest court date gives them 9 days.

This is what pisses me right off, all this delaying.......

you either have the money in place or you dont, If i dont pay and bailiffs or whoever take me to court, do i get an adjournment because someone may give me some money in a weeks time, i doubt it. Think how many buisness may have gone to the wall, or had to lay staff off because they aint paid bills etc.

This sort of thing can't continue but do points deductions really act as a deterrent to some of the risk takers and gamblers that pass themselves off as football club directors and chairmen?
How about if you want to be a director or chairman of any professional football club, you have to place a substantial amount of money with either the Premier League or Football League? This money would be then taken off you in the event of your club going into administration.
Perhaps by punishing the directors and chairman personally and not the club as a whole is the answer?

They are hanging on for their parachute payments.

Out of interest, if they did go bust, where would the money allocated for the parachute payment go?

It may sound wrong, but I hope they go bust for the good of football. Hopefully it would have some implications, although I doubt the twats at the Premier League will do anything to make the system better. As it stands things are very wrong. Unfortunately there are a lot of people who can't see this - largely younger fans (and some ignorant older fans) engrossed by everything Sky tells them. Portsmouth (and hopefully other 'bigger' clubs) crashing will show people that all is not well.

A sorry state of affairs that English football needs a club to go out of business before it learns a lesson. Sorry, sorry state.

Problem is, Pompey, although in the prem, are not a big club. It will take a long term established prem club to fold before anyone takes notice. Sadly, I think even if Man U went, nobody will give a f***.

So, going on the BBC article, Portsmouth owe £7.4m of unpaid VAT, part of which they are in dispute about, plus a further £4.7m in unpaid PAYE/NI. The court registrar suspects the club in insolvent, and HMRC are 'sure' that the club is. I can't possibly see how they can complete a takeover in 7 days, so surely they will simply submit their 'statement of financial affairs' next Wednesday and then, when it becomes clear they are trading insolvently, be wound up on the Friday?

What a complete mess.

I think it's more likely that the Premier league would some how find a way to ensure they can continue their current practice, while avoiding the repurcussions of debt.
