I lived in Pompey for many a year and have lots of good friends that are Pompey fans, it is worth noting that nearly all of them want Pompey to start again and they also believe that is what they deserve. There is no point in them starting League one with a handful of youth players and coming bottom of the league. It is time to start again, the adventure itself would probably be fantastic anyway watching them steam through the leagues taking thousands to little grounds up and down the country.

Pompey do have a set of fans that are loyal and can generate an incredible atmosphere, as long as they have that, there will always be a Portsmouth FC.

As I understand it....yes. However, Fratton can only be used as a sports venue, so it has little value ...?..£2-3 million.

Worth £2-3M but with a few nods and "special" handshakes the restrictive covenants could be lifted by the council to allow future redevelopment. Look what happened to The Albion -> Chartwell bought The Goldstone for £7M , then planning permission was granted for a retail park and they sold it on for £23M.

Anyone remember this? The new Pompey stadium from a few years back:

I think the administrator is wrong when he says some of the players/agents don't understand what is at stake.

They do understand - they just don't care, or at least it's very secondary to their own wages.

I'm not quite as anti these players as some people, though. This situation is not, despite what some are saying, of their making and there is some fairly unpleasant emotional blackmail being used to make them sign away a lot of money because the former executives couldn't run a whelk stall.

They're being offered - with a gun to the head - the prospect of losing what they are owed in their contract, going somewhere else, getting half the money if they're lucky...don't get me wrong, I put the existence of Pompey way above these people's huge salaries and plenty of other people out there are taking salary cuts, but I can understand why they might play a bit of brinkmanship.

As the Bournemouth lurker on here (our m/b is so dull!)..I must admit that the attitude of some (NOT ALL!) Brighton fans regarding this Pompey situation is very suprising. I just thought that of any club, you would know what it feels like being in financial trouble.

There was so much good will towards your club in those days from all of the football world. I know you managed to get a great team of people together to pull you through (to your credit), but don't look down on other clubs beacause they can't do the same...all fans to a degree revel in the good times and don't consider what might happen in the future.

I hope they pull through, but I have a feeling i won't be going to a match on Aug 18th......

To anyone tempted to sympathise with their predicament as they desperately try to flog off players (and shamelessly brand the players as greedy) consider this.

Of the "high earners" they're so keen to ship out, Kitson, Lawrence, Huseklepp, Halford, Norris and Varney were all signed AFTER they went into administration. Only Kanu and Ben Haim can possibly be labelled as symbolic of the previous, frivolous regime. ALL of the others were signed when they were ALREADY up shit creek, and yet now/ they have the bare faced cheek to call the players unrealistic & greedy?

Their sense of self pity is staggering, even at this late stage.

We gave assistance to Plymouth Argyle fans last season when it looked like they were going under. We helped them organise a "Fans United" day at Home Park.

My brother is a Pompey fan.

He's been going through agony for the last 5 years.

My view is they are better off folding and starting again with FC Portsmouth, minus all the scumbag, useless, greedy players who have skinned this team alive.

Redknapp, Mandaric and Storrie are mostly to blame obviously

Scandalous a team with such loyal support are in a position like this.

and Wrexham and Chester and Doncaster. And Bury (buy a seat). We've not forgotten, nor looked down our noses. PFC look like being the exception from us.

Why are the players scumbags? They've only taken what was offered to them by greedy Pompey, living beyond their means.

You feel more sympathy for some clubs than others. I find it hard to feel for Pompey because essentially the club cheated their way to the FA Cup Final by spending what they couldn't afford. Best to start again, I hope the fans get a decent owner like we got lucky with Dick Knight.

I feel sorry for the fans. No one wants to see their club destroyed, and it isn't as if it was them who ran the club into the ground.

For whatever the reason, I get no real pleasure in seeing any football club going to the wall, all this is just one step closer to the demise of football in this country.

It's been said on here many times before but once the lower clubs start to tumble it will start a trend, a trend no real football fan, whoever you support will want to see!

I think it is a well known fact that most football clubs run with massive debt hanging around their necks, it can't be comfy for them at all.

I still maintain and always will, players at top level just can't be worth more a week than the prime minister of this country gets a year, it's just plain madness in my opinion.

Yes I do remember this. That was when the likes of Defoe, Crouch, Sol Campbell where playing for them. In the back of my mind I did find it strange how Portsmouth where attracting such high quality players. Well a few years later we had our answer, they couldn't. And even after everything that had happend they still offered highly lucrative contracts to players.

This whole thing has now gone too far, and I bet any real Pompey supporter must be absolutely cringing about all this. The best thing Portsmouth could do now is go in to liquidation because honestly their situation is only going to get worse. It wouldn't surprise me if they end up selling their ground as well. I actually feel a little bit sorry for Portsmouth.

Portsmouth is an example to every other club in the football league. This is what happens when you get the wrong people in to run your club, without the money and infrastructure to support it.

working class (from a rough background)

Why do you make this assumption that working class people come from a rough background? Shall I presume you're a patronising middle-class fool?

I actually think that if this happens it will be for the best both for Portsmouth fans AND for football in this country.

In terms of the fans, it seems that the vast majority of their core, loyal fanbase want/think it would be best to start again at the bottom with a clean slate and work from there.

In terms of the wider picture, hopefully clubs will look at what has happened to a relatively big and successful club which is heading for oblivion after spending well beyond its means and take this as a lesson to bring their own houses into order unless they want to go the same way.

At this stage, I really think thats the best possible outcome for all concerned and, although I'd take no particular pleasure from it, maybe it NEEDS to happen for the greater good.

This is just a blackmail target date imposed by Trevor Birch the administrator on the greedy players.

If I had a contract worth £30,000 per week, with twelve months to run, it means I have got £1,560,000 coming by this time next year

Why would I say, "OK forget that, put me on £5000 a week instead, and you keep the £1.3m you owe me"

The only reason is that Birch is threatening its this or literally nothing.

Its a mess, but I bet Pompey don't go bust, but that they will be in court for breach of contract with one or more of the six players still holding out for the money they are owed.
