Up north for work, we used to go to a great restaurant called the Delhi Junction, in the converted Dore railway Station (a village just outside Sheffield). Food was excellent and we’d generally let the guy who ran it to just bring us whatever he recommended.

This chap though, HATED people ordering popadoms on arrival (as an accompaniment was ‘okay’ but absolutely not as a warm up). Took real umbrage at it “it’s like going to a decent English restaurant and ordering crisps before your meal arrives”.
people go to a decent resturant and have crisps as an accompaniment?

The most curious thing..
Lots of popadums with chutneys, the tumeric yoghurt thing, and the onion stuff.

Then wonder why getting through the actual curry, two or three side dishes, nan and possibly rice, with a large Cobra or few seems so difficult.

Owners and staff of Indian restaurants HATE their establishments being called curry houses.

I too am with Smithy and Banjo. Eat what I order.
Well that explains why it all kicked off back in '85

I thought you simply ordered enough poppadoms that there are always too many

Then they should equally hate their restaurants and take aways being labelled as "Indian" then, as they and their food is from Bangladesh.

Actually have no idea what you are on about.

OP mentioned Indian restaurants.

As a type 1 diabetic I'm acutely aware of the enormous amount of carbs in a curry.

So 2 papadoms to start is okay (not sharing) but I find compelled to share a naan and rice. Can't be leaving anything on the table and with at least 2 large cobras would otherwise struggle.

Blood sugar levels go through the roof for next 5 hours ...

When some twat decides to stick their dirty stinking finger into the centre of the pile of papadoms and laughs, they confirm themself to be prime CJTC’s
Indeed. It would be like inserting a 'sentence' without punctuation into a conversation.

Share the curry but individual poppadoms and naan bread. That’s the normal way isn’t it ?
"share the curry" ???
Burn this heretic, burn him with fire.
If I go to a curry house and order a prawn madras, pilau rice and garlic naan, I expect my companions to similarly order what they want. I don't expect to have a bit of someone elses dinner and they're not having any of mine (a caveat to this is that I may, at my discretion, offer a piece of naan to my wife if she's been good)

I thought the standard was place them in the middle of the table, karate chop them in half, everyone helps themselves.

Surely take one then bash it on your own plate? I don’t want someone else bashing it for me, nor do I want to be rationed by someone else.

Once initial pop has been consumed, dive in for a second and repeat.

We keep them in the middle and take one each as we want one. That goes on your side plate. That’s safe. That’s yours. Nobody is touching that.

We then use the teaspoons to put some pickle either directly on the popadom or onto our side plates. We do not dunk.

I’ve admonished a JCL at our table before for immediately smashing his big gammony fist into the pile the second they were put down and then proceeded to pick splinters of them up and double dunk into the pickles.

That’s not how we roll at our table. We have standards. We have systems. If the system breaks down, we break down.

He was not invited back.

Thank goodness someone is upholding standards.

Anyway I’ve just arranged to go out for a curry tonight so thanks @Papak.

As I mentioned on the crisp thread I am NOT a sharer, so of course the same principal applies to papadums. I'll normally order myself 2, they will then reside on my side plate where I will consume them as my starter along with the moorish delights of the raw onion, lime pickle, mint sauce and mango chutney carousel (no dunking, as @The Clamp rightly states - this isn't a cuffing FONDUE is it).

Then me and the doris will usually split one curry between us, spooning what we want from the dish. I just don't carry the appetite any more for a whole one to myself and neither does she, especially after the papadum starter and a few Cobras. We grew tired of taking doggy bags of the stuff home with us all the time. Waste of money. With the servings you get at the Indian Cottage in Shoreham, 1 between 2 is plenty.
