He's highly rated by a lot of other coaches/managers - hope he falls flat on his arse though.

Good luck to him. Good to see a new young coach get the job rather than a recycled manager who has had plenty of jobs before like Coppell/Billy Davis/Curbishley/Mclaren etc. And its another English manager in the top 2 divisions.

Appointing a young manager with hardly any experience has worked quite well for us, Norwich, MK Dons, Palace, Huddersfield etc recently so why won't it work for them? Fresh ideas and enthusiasm can only be a good thing for them.

Could be an inspired signing. Still sure of three points when Pompey come to the Amex, are we?

Could be a harder mtch than we thought

Good call. These young pretenders do need to be given a crack of the whip.

However I think you were perhaps a little unfair on Mr Curbishley who I'm surprised has been out of management for so long. Kept Charlton in the Premiership year after year, then he leaves and they fall to shit.

Mind you, there are also plenty of Brian Kidds and Steve Keans who haven't covered the "work your way up from coaching" route in glory

West Brom fan at work seems to think this is a very shrewd appointment by Pompey. Speaks very highly of him, don't mock yet just in case...

I think Kidd and Keen were probably coaches for too long (or maybe were never going to be managers).

Apparently Appleton is highly rated in the game, a bit like Boothroyd was before he got the Watford job,

Shows that Pompey may finally be financially astute as well by not going for a big name. They are talking about a 5 year plan and have appointed a young manager with good coaching experience I wonder where they got that idea?

Got to laugh at what they have become !

why, this guy is very well thought of at WBA and Wroy Hodgson has heaped praise on him wishing well. If you recall Gus had only been an assistant before we appointed him..... I think it's a shrewd move, the last thing Pompey need is some big time charlie at the mo', they need to rebuild.

Most people knew he was the brains behind the Leeds thing as well as being a top top player. A risk of course but due to being a name it got papered over a bit.

Who knows maybe he will be decent for them. Pompey fans up in arms about though.

Thought Coppell was in for this , suprised this bloke was ahead of him

This.

I think this could be an inspired appointment. He is very highly thought of within the game...

Lets hope not though eh? :D

Don't get how we can mock it to be honest. Gus Poyet didn't have previous management experience but had assisted other managers just like Pompeys new boss. Could be good or bad but lets not judge yet.

Totally agree, take Mourinho for example, he had no football background growing up (other than his dad being a goalkeeper in the Portuguese lower leagues) and in a few years he is manager of Real Madrid, and won the champions league with two different clubs.
