Who? Where did they dig him up from??

Some very good managers have come out of nowhere mind.

I glanced at the title of the thread and first read it as Michael Atherton...which would have been a bit of a surprise!

I wouldn't dismiss this one out of hand . Appleton has quietly been building up his knowledge , with the eventual aim of going into management .
It may well turn out to be an astute signing : certainly a cheapish one , so it it goes tits up they won't have got their fingers burned. Because we all know how financially frugal and sensible they are .

Don't get how we can mock it to be honest. Gus Poyet didn't have previous management experience but had assisted other managers just like Pompeys new boss. Could be good or bad but lets not judge yet.

Everytime I hear his name mentioned on the local news I keep thinking I'm hearing Michael Atherton too (and thinking shock appointment)

Difference being that Gus was very well known as a player. (Not that this equates with good management)

An unknown by most - could either be a masterstroke or a disaster.

The thing that is also amusing is he is on a 3.5 year contract.

Nice pay off when it goes tits up

Most people knew he was the brains behind the Leeds thing as well as being a top top player. A risk of course but due to being a name it got papered over a bit.

Who knows maybe he will be decent for them. Pompey fans up in arms about though.

Thought Coppell was in for this , suprised this bloke was ahead of him
