Racism in the UK has been steadily increasing for many years now. The knee is a reaction to this, it’s not the cause. If you want my view, Brexit and the toxicity of the campaign and result is a major cause. It emboldened certain people and legitimized certain beliefs and language.

Huh? So there was no racism (or at least significantly less) before Brexit? You can't blame all that is wrong with the world on Brexit.

I didn’t say no racism or even significantly less. Jesus wept, are you really this thick or did you misread my post? I said increasing.

Brighton factually.....
No, football fans cannot be compared to a race.

I stand by my comment "many football fans are very, very thick" because I've been a football fan long enough to experience the very many that are. Not all, not most, but many.

You don't see it any other sport - rugby, cricket, tennis, whatever. It's unique to football. It must be something to do with the tribal nature of the sport that appeals to neanderthals who say and do the most stupid things.

Some clubs are worse than others. We're not that bad generally but we do have our fair share of absolute morons sadly.

Must admit I've never witnessed racism or homophobia at the club, which I'm very proud of. I like to think our moron to non-moron ratio is great enough to stamp it out early.

Again sweeping generalizations about football fans, Cricket fans can kick off, Rugby League fans are very tribal and like a scrap go to a Wigan v St Helens game and you will be greeted with police horses and fans fighting in town.
I have seen plenty of racism in and around Albion fans, admittedly the majority of the time i have, it has been away from the Amex.
However I have heard racist comments at the Albion and several times only last season.

You cannot compare football fans or any team sport to individual sports like tennis or golf, tribalism is essential to supporting a team I would think and does not necessarily be a bad thing, it can work for good look at St Pauli, a model club if you want to talk about racism and sexisim....

We can talk about this all day long, and I am sure you would plonk me in the thick moronic Neanderthal bracket, I don't care.
That's just part of the problem, people like Margret Thatcher made.... were all hooligans.
Nah

I’ve seen that, it wasn’t me that has named him, I was just replying to the post that had.
It seems that on Twitter he is being named and not the other Dan.

A screenshot of said group chat is all over Twitter with ‘Dan Cadman’ as one of the posters

I’ve seen 2 screenshots, one had Dan with some hearts and another had his name and not the hearts, everything else was the same on both screenshots.
Reading the comments on Twitter it seems a few people are confused by this.

As an Albion fan of many years now exiled in St Helens I have to say that this is not true! I am not saying there's never ANY argy-bargy; but police horses and fighting in town??

Hardly ever!!

Only 3? Seemed like more than that on the group chat.

Doesn't mean they all partook in the behaviour. And it also doesn't mean anyone who was involved didn't express remorse or a willingness to change/learn, etc. Who knows - the point is, we know nothing about the investigation or the outcome.

Wow. It was real after all?

I gave them the benefit of the doubt. So many screenshots on the web are fabricated / photoshopped these days.

Now I have so many questions. Is the Pompey Academy whites only or something? Have they not had black teammates? Why would anyone put this in a group chat that can easily be screenshotted? I mean what the actual f&ck?!

Clearly I'm really naïve.

It hasn't , it's always been there, it's just that social media now gives people an outlet for their racist views. Couple this with the "bantz" culture, where you can say anything you like, then just claim it was a joke or a bit of banter and you have a perfect mix for these idiotic outbursts.

I'm sure the same usual defence will come out, "they were young" or "they were just having a bit of banter" or my favourite "didn't you ever do something bad when you were young? " All in an attempt to deflect from things that have no place in a civilised society...

I disagree strongly with that.

I think we are more sensitive culturally and more enlightened than when I grew up. This is the most enlightened age.

That said, the downside is the absolutist nature of judgement. This new consciousness is unforgiving. A kind of liberal puritanicalism.

I don't buy into it. My first thoughts are of normally remedy rather than retribution. Bit of a bleeding heart me, and I'm not going to change.

Heaven rejoices most at the repentant sinner, not the resplendent righteous who harbour a secret hypocrisy.

Recently a friend of mine asked me advice on homophobic comments she had received at work. We had a long chat. The net result was that the person making them, although they didn't intend malice, was probably saved from severe discipline. But they also took much needed time to realise the effects of what they had done and set their face to change. That's how it works for me.
