Pompey set for administration....

Portsmouth FC could become the first Premier League club to go into administration after failing to block a petition from HM Revenue & Customs.

HMRC had applied for a winding-up petition against Portsmouth on 23 December but the club argued that the VAT part of its tax bill was too high.

However, a High Court judge dismissed Portsmouth's claim and the hearing is expected to go ahead on 10 February.

The outcome could send Portsmouth a step closer to administration.

Nobody from Portsmouth was immediately available for comment.

"At the High Court today Mr Justice Newey dismissed an application from Portsmouth City (sic) Football Club Limited for a winding up petition to be struck out," a spokesperson for the Judicial Communications Office said.

"A further hearing to consider HMRC's winding-up petition will take place in due course."

Never nice to see this happen to any football club.

EXCELLENT news.
They'll soon be back in their rightful position, bouncing around the lower leagues again. Good stuff.

Is the 10 point deduction clause a FA rule or a FL one?

Will the 'points deduction next year if you're relegated' subclause kick in?

Not entirely unexpected that the appeal against the petition was thrown out - they really need to start selling players if they want to avoid winding up or administration!

At the moment, administration may actually be the best option for the future of Portsmouth FC. Yes, it would probably relegate them. However, at least it would get rid of the mystery foreign owners and their alleged lack of real-life money.

The problem is that Portsmouth no longer own the ground around Fratton Park and if they go into administration will probably lose Fratton Park itself, which several of the clubs debts are secured against.

A ten point deduction now would leave them with 4 pts, 15 pts from safety. Oh, but they'll have a game in hand. :jester:

Nah, they should get relegated anyway. Let them start next season on -10.

EXACTLY Chappers, EXACTLY.

Tempting, but there's enough rubbishness down there to possibly reprieve them this season if they don't get the deduction. Bolton should start to pull away, but Hull and Burnley are practically nailed on, and Wolves are really not very clever.

Lets just make SURE they're relegated this season and utterly RUINED in the process, on and off the pitch. They'll bomb in the Championship anyway.

I'm already looking forward to seeing this absolutely massive club lose midweek at home to Doncaster in front of a crowd of 11,093 next season.

Hah! and they wanted the PL to lift the transfer embargo? Serves them right.

Indeed.
They can't even afford to pay the players they've already got, and we've seen what they're like at paying transfer fees. How they believe they can POSSIBLY justify adding more players to their squad right now is laughable.

But where will home be? What would happen to Fratton Park? I guess they could groundshare with Aldershot...

Mr Redknapp clearly saw the iceberg coming or at least the one that didn't have the bloke from the serious fraud office sitting on it.

As much as the likes of Pompey and Palace are our rivals, given all the hurt we went through you wouldn't wish this on any team.

If they survive as a club, it will probably be at the expense of losing Fratton Park, (Groundshare at St Mary's) and will they look back at the FA Cup win as a great day for the club but also the very beginning of the end?

It's a NINE point deduction for administration in the Prem, not ten. The ten point thing is an FL rule.

wow you learn something new everyday!!

i want to see them relagated, but i wouldnt want to see any team die. why would anyone want that?
