I would suggest that fact the photo wasn’t deemed offensive when he tweeted it on previous royal births but is now is more to do with how the people offended’s minds work rather than DB’s. Perhaps they are the racist ones linking a monkey with a mixed race baby?

Where are all these previous tweets, using the same image, for other royal births? I'd expect them to have been retweeted like mad in support of Baker's defence?

You've taken the incident out of context. He has an ongoing gag with monkeys dressed as famous people, Katie Hopkins does not.

As The Clamps says, the outrage is from people coming to DB for the first time. Unfortunately for Danny he didn't pick up on the racial overtones that would be implied in his post. As he said, stupid and unthinking. And now he has been thrown to the wolves because of it.

I wish no ill on Danny at all. I've taken nothing out of context, and I'm not remotely offended, personally. But to look at that image IN context (it is in a tweet about the birth of Meghan's child) and NOT see that it is clearly going to cause offense in many, many quarters, is utterly, utterly ridiculous.

dont think he's been sacked for the beer tweet, its the "funny" picture in post #13 that this is really about. which is clearly out of order.

An explanation and apology for being a bit thick would have sufficed IMO.

The BBC is on a mission to thin the ranks of pale Males, so any excuse. And this one was too good for them to miss.

Actually, no, I'm not certain. I don't understand what other context he could be referring to. He likes a few quaffs of an evening, this looks like a really, really bad joke.

The true measure is to ask yourself if any of us posted that on here how long before the picture was removed and a ban issued for the offender?

I can see the outrage [emoji23][emoji23]

It was racist post can’t believe some of the twaddle on here. All decent football fans want to see racism and homophobia (especially us) removed from the game. Deserved the sack he hates Albion all good #****

Didn’t expect that from you. Completely disagree. Move On.

He is no way a racist but, in today’s environment, with the “racist” tag being applied so liberally he should have seen this coming. Bit of a dickhead but offence not intended.

I don't consider myself to be a snowflake, so maybe someone can correct me. But my first reaction when I scrolled down to see the monkey picture was "ohhh, god".

Having listened to DB over a number of years on radio and pods, I'm absolutely certain he didn't intend this as being a racist jibe. But man alive (as he would say), given the fact that its a mixed race baby, the first in the history of the royal family, to then post a pic today of some people leading out a monkey...

I'll put it down to misjudgement. But bloody hell Danny.
I can't believe it's taken until post 29 for someone to notice it was a ****ing daft tweet.

The tweet itself looks full on racist. It's only after some people have done some digging and announce that he's posted the same thing for other royal babies that you get some perspective that shows that's probably not how he meant it. Bloody stupid though.

That is quite a good analogy, actually.

You're right if somebody had posted that picture in the royal baby thread, without a doubt people would have reported it as offensive, and I'm certain we'd have deleted it and censured the poster.

Where the analogy is also interesting is that I suppose the level of censure would have reflected the moderators' already formed views on the poster (thus informing their assessment of the intent). Much as people's existing views on Danny Baker are strongly influencing their take on any censure he ought be subject to.

He is a football fan and a journalist/presenter who is knowledgeable about the current game. If the phrase "monkey chants" has not been a part of his regular reading/conversation then he watches his football from another planet. The connection is, arguably, not at the forefront of Joe Public's mind but anyone following football news in current times understands the connection made in racist abuse/chanting. Pleading ignorance just doesn't track if he had thought at all. This isn't like you or me tweeting... He is a public figure who has a responsibility to think before using social media. He didn't think therefore is paying the price.

I don't believe he is racist, just an idiot, but so much so he cannot stay in a role at a publicly owned corporation.

Indeed.

People defending him are basing their defence of him on their past experience / opinions of the man, rather than the actual post in question.

Massively stupid - obviously offensive (INTENT doesn't define whether something IS offensive) - and clearly not acceptable from an employee of the national broadcaster

Imagine the (understandable) reaction, if Katie Hopkins had posted a picture of a couple with a baby chimp, in this context?

I’m still waiting to see these posts of other Royal Babies, have you got any you can share?

A lot of people blaming "the offended of social media" or words to that effect.

I suggest the BBC is actually more afraid of the fact he was criticised for it by the tabloids.
