Is the article honestly saying that because of their political views Ed Milliband is more intelligent than Cameron?? As for left wingers being more open minded, tell that to the Union leaders who are paid vast sums bringing their members out on strike to justify their position, the latest examples are trying come out on strike just before the Olympics...is that not trying to blackmail the country!!
Those posted survey's are based on surveys from 1958/1970....jeez,we are discussing 54 /42 year old surveys...c'mon the world has moved on from those decades.
I'm more right wing than left, but not a racist as I see people for the inner person, colour of skin has nothing to do with it...there are good and bad amongst all people. The left seem to want everybody to be the same...so everyone is classed at the lowest common denominater, can you tell me that the leaders of Labour and the Communist party feel that they are the common people. There must be leaders otherwise it's mob rule. We have seen what a mess the Labour party has done leaving this country in the mire, summed up by the message left when they departed office...'There's no money left!'
Not saying all they have done has been wrong...NHS being one...not expecting everyone to agree with me,but that is what political choice is about!
Peace fellow humans.

Hehehe. Choice.

The Guardians take on the article (just in case any right wingers are not upset enough).

well brookers take on it. he may be a funny and smart fella but he is a self confessed political ignoramus and at the end of the day his respectability amongst his peers is as important to him as anything. and that comes through saying the right things even if you are not 100 percent yourself.

he has probably been the funniest mocker of the daily mail in the media, compared to the majority of drivel that gets guffaws similar to when jasper carrot used to go SUN READERS hahahahaha in the 80s. but the fact he is married to konnie huq and laughs at the daily mail doesnt necessarily make him the f***ing oracle on all the problems facing the UK at the moment.

In my experience it's not about being left wing or right wing, but how far (in either direction) from centre a person is, that dictates their intelligence. The brightest people are able to see and understand the opposite view, and hence are likely to be more centralist. The more right or left wing you go, the more close-minded that person becomes and completely unwilling to accept facts that don't fit with their personal ideology, so a militant left-wing anarchist/socialist is just as tedious company as a wild-eyed panicking xenophobe from the right.

Your probably right, and what this study is most-likely describing as left-wing is actually centrist, and its the right wing that are off the chart. Doesn't seem to be much of a far-left any more.

What a load of rubbish. For me right wing equates with with freedom and tolerance, left wing with bullying state interference and restrictions on liberty. Ofcourse it depends how far right you go, but when the right becomes extreme it meets the left anyway. The Mail might be a rag but at least it isn't pretentious, unlike The Guardian which is so up itself and normally so wrong.

People are judging left/right extremes...bnp/swp etc... and as somebody said earlier. Many are put off displaying national pride because racist, fascist halfwits seem to have claimed the St George flag as their own etc.... I think left wing people consider other people less fortunate more and want equal rights for all. Right Wingers seem to have a more selfish agenda...

True it takes a lot of thought to get your body to believe in trying to reproduce itself in another male body.

Well that's the theory proven then

The stupid people are those that just accept views from a certain political 'wing' purely because they wish to belong and subscribe to a certain set of ideas. Id go as far to say that anybody who subscribes to a political 'wing' is probably less intelligent than somebody who critically analyses and considers facts independently of partisan insterests.

Good point, which is what makes this recent news from Texas, a little bit scary. You could end up sending your kids to school and have them actually believing some of the most ridiculous bollocks ever.

One of the smartest takes I've seen on this issue. Also ironic people who are so far one way that they start to overlap the other are the ones least likely to understand the opposing view.

Indeed, whether you go right in the circle, or left in the circle, you always end up in the same place.

The whole concept of right vs left is totally bogus. The real contest is Liberty vs Tyranny. End of.

This.

Both extreme ends of the spectrum, plus human nature of power corrupts, is the problem; rather than theorising that left wing extremists are more intelligent.

some old sage I spoke to years ago always said that if you put all the extreme right and left wingers in the same room they would come out voting for the same party bit like joining a full circle

tbf, no it isnt. its suggesting that the right wing electorate are are less intelligent. but what it actually says (as our OP rather neatly puts it) bigots are less intelligent, only it ignores the possiblity that a left winger could hold bigoted opinions. it classifies people by their answers, in reality "throw away the key" and "dont want foriegners taking our jobs" is as popular in the working class left as it is in the working class right. its mis-defining left and right wing, probably to suit the conclusion (though thats the daily fails take, the report might be more objective that portrayed). i would say "conservative" ideas are more due to a lack of bredth of experience and education, not intelligence per se.

Please don't believe the hype. Right, left or centre are ploys to keep the honest folk divided. Just imagine the changes we could make if we all united.
