Polish president Lech Kaczynski and his wife are believed to be among dozens of people killed when their plane crashed in western Russia.

Polish officials say at least 87 people died when their jet came down as it was approaching Smolensk airport.

Reports say there were no survivors when the Tupolev Tu-154 plane crashed.

"The plane scraped the tree tops, crashed and caught fire," Polish foreign ministry spokesman Piotr Pszkowski said.

In addition to the Kaczynskis, the Polish central bank governor Slawomir Skrzypek was also on board, according to a bank spokesman.

They were in Russia to mark the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre, when Soviets killed thousands of Poles.

Make that a few more

Not one to conspire, but could it be an assassination? Controversial right-wing catholic type fellow wasn't he

He was in a tuplov 154. Not exactly a modern plane and one I would certainly hesitate before getting into. More likely just a crash. They do happen.

Latest report is that the plane hit trees - sounds like either some bloody low flying, an attempted emergency landing, or a landing accident.

the fact that the army chief of staff and other cabinet ministers were onboard would raise a question or two, perhaps?

that said, they do have a pretty shoddy safety record...

putin has put himself in personal charge of the investigation. make of that what you will..

building sites accross London will be shut on Monday as a sign of respect

No, they'll carry on working damn hard at what they do and being polite and friendly. That's not to say they won't be upset at what's happened but they'll keep things running smoothly. Polish women are classy.

The safety record of the plane is without an issue, however not to impressed by the black boxes being sent straight to Moscow.
