Were they right to leave the kids?

I'm surprised that point hasn't been discussed on here at all.

A lot of people on here are making a judgement based on British culture. Here in Berlin a lot of kids seems to play freely away from the parents on the streets and in the parks....a bit like I used to when I was young. And this is in the city centre.

It would be unreasonable to brand any of their parents as irresponsible should anything happen to them.

Is there a similar culture to Berlin in Portugal?

I would suggest that it's probably you who is reading shitty (possibly tabloid) news stories and believeing them.

Brilliant, so you're willing to make assumptions about ME even though I haven't really commented on the case.

Evidence really isn't your thing, is it?!

For my part I have approached this with what I would say (or at least like to think) is a relatively open mind from the start and from that standpoint their story stinks and there have been some odours from day one.

If you're 'open-minded', why make stupid, baseless accusations?

You're not making intelligent observations - you're just mudslinging.

You're the one who started supposing what I read about this case, not me.

And as for stupid baseless accusations, well we'll see. As more and more details come out their entire story seems more and more not al lit was originally made out to be, you know the story which so many people accepted without question.

They won't be 3 or under mate - at that age they need serious supervision - and care.

I had a look at www.findmadeline.com. I do find it a bit odd, for example...

Latest Update - Gerry's Blog/Diary

Day 103 - 14/08/2007

Relatively quiet day. This allowed me to catch up with e-mails, phone calls and some administration. No major news on any front.

The weather has been unseasonably cool over the last 2-3 days. I have had a long sleeved top on for the first time in over 2 months and it is more pleasant overnight, making sleep easier.

"Making sleep easier" What, like when you are holiday and you are restless because of the heat. Or because your little girl is missing?

Am I alone in thinking that Gerry MCcann in particular enjoys this kind of limelight?

I think the limelight thing is what keeps them going to be honest.

The Diary of Kate and Gerry McCann :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Exactly, I can see it now, presented as a unique insight into the minds of the couple facing such trauma. I'm sure people will buy it.

It's only what the police suspect, but they're not going public with the evidence that "proves" this. Interesting that they are suggesting the McCanns stay in Portugal as a big announcement is "imminent"

Madeleine cops: 'She died by accident in flat'

Martin Fricker in Praia Da Luz 23/08/2007

Senior detectives have told prosecutors they believe Madeleine McCann was killed accidentally in her holiday flat.

The three Portuguese officers leading the investigation made the revelation at a meeting this week - and claimed to have evidence that supports their theory.

A source said: "They said they think Madeleine is dead and it happened in the flat. But they don't think she was killed on purpose. It's the first time they have said this.

"All they would say is they have evidence her death was accidental. Nobody knows what the evidence is."

The detectives - Guilhermino Encarnacao, Goncalo Amaral and Luis Neves - admitted that there are still a number of potential theories about the missing four-year-old that are being considered.

But they said they did not believe she was deliberately murdered.

The source added: "At the moment they are leaning towards it being a tragic accident."

There are also said to be simmering tensions between Portuguese and British police over the handling of the case.

The Portuguese are furious at the time it is taking to get crucial DNA results on blood found in the Praia da Luz flat from the British laboratory where they are being tested.

But British detectives pointed out the evidence was only uncovered because of a UKled review of the investigation into Madeleine's disappearance on May 3.

It is believed police are waiting for the results of the tests before they make their next move.

Despite the revelation by detectives, Gerry McCann yesterday said he believed his daughter is still alive and could be in Spain.

He told a Spanish newspaper: "There is a very real possibility that Madeleine is alive and we want the police to look for her.

"The possibility that Madeleine is alive and in Spain is real. The border between the two countries is very big. If someone had a car, it is clear they could cross into Spain. There is no border guard and no one closed the border the night Madeleine disappeared."

But he also admitted: "We've done a lot of research into missing children and we realise the percentage of minors who reappear is very small."

As we revealed yesterday, Gerry and wife Kate have put their plans to return home on hold. Police asked them not to leave in mid-September as planned in case there are developments in the investigation.

And yesterday Kate, a locum GP from Rothley, Leics, said: "We have still not decided to go home. Emotionally, it's very difficult to return without Madeleine."

Kate and Gerry, a consultant heart specialist, yesterday posed for pictures outside the flat where Madeleine was last seen 112 days ago as they backed a campaign for a Europe-wide sex offenders' register.

He said: "A number of areas in European law may be improved to help prevent child abuse and track those responsible for such crimes.

"Kate and I would like to encourage further debate on how Europe can best manage serious crimes such as child abduction."
