Well, there was the Soviet invasion in 1939 (when the Nazis attacked from the west and began WWII, the Russians decided to walk in the back door and grab the eastern third of the country - something you don't hear quite so much about, since the Ivans later became our allies). Then there was the massacre in the Katyn Forest of captured Polish officers, which they tried to blame on the Germans. Not until Gorbachev came to power did they admit it.
As the Germans retreated towards the end of the war, the Poles in Warsaw staged an uprising which was bloodily put down by the Nazis while Stalin's troops stood by on the east bank of the river (where the stadium is now) and did nothing to help. And there followed 45 years of Soviet-inspired communism. Oh, and that suspicious air crash at Smolensk that wiped out much of the Polish government.
So, yes - I'd say it was about more than opposing football teams ...
