Yeah I know we should focus on winning all three but realistically I think the nerves will start to kick in for all three teams.

Therefore I predict 5 more points - up to 89 might be enough to see us scrap into 2nd.

Besides it's fun to speculate!

I predict we need one more than Boro or Burnley, failing that we need better goal difference and the same amount...

This would either involve Burnley only picking up 4 points from Preston, Charlton & QPR, or (if our one win is against Boro), Boro picking up only 2 points from Ipswich & Birmingham. Not gonna happen.

We'll need all 9, unless Burnley lose at Preston tonight in which case 7 will do.

Burnley have been winning by the odd goal or scraping late draws. If their luck runs out, it's perfectly conceivable they could draw tonight and against QPR. Then 2 wins would see us promoted before we go to 'Boro. Then we play them for the title, no pressure.

I've been resisting the IF, BUT scenarios until now, but with just 3 games left the combinations are more plausible now.

no point thinking about anything less that the 9 points, even if Burnley drop points tonight we need to make sure we do our bit and let the other teams concern themselves with their own performances (at least until the Boro game :D)

My best guess is 92 as I think Burnley will draw tonight*. We can only get 91 or 93.

(*this kyboshes any bet on them to pay for the Wembley trip.)

This. Would be interested to know how many 'points needed' threads have been set up. The answer is that we don't know, probably until around 1420 on 7 May.

Even non points needed threads turn into points needed threads, even Groundhog Day is now infected!

If history tells us one thing, it shows us the highest points tallies by teams finishing 3rd in the second tier of English football since The Premier League's inception, and not being promoted automatically are:

In The Premier League Era, excluding the 94/95 season when only 2 went up, the highest points totals for finishing 3rd have been:

Sunderland - 1997/1998 - 90
Portsmouth - 1992/1993 - 88
Ipswich - 1999/2000 - 87
Bolton - 2000/2001 - 87
Ipswich - 1998-1999 - 86
Wolves - 2001/2002 - 86
Norwich - 2014/2015 - 86
Derby - 2013/2014 - 85
West Ham - 2011/2012 - 86
Ipswich - 2004/2005 - 85
Derby - 2006/2007 - 84
Watford - 2005/2006 - 81
Sheffield United - 2002/2003 - 80
Sheffield United - 2008/2009 - 80
Swansea City - 2010/2011 - 80 (Cardiff finished 4th on 80 points also)

I say lets win all 3 remaining games.
