Please, please, please can we come up with some NEW songs (Merged*4)

Tune of 'California Girls';

Our south coast club is hip
you'll really love the way we play
and when we win all you can shout
is that all our boys are gay

but we don't care we're Brighton
and we know that you are green
we support the best club in the land
The Brighton and Hove Albion football team

you wish you all could follow The Albion
repeat.

A lot of the suggestions here fall into the same trap - they're a bit too 'wordy' to learn. We'll end up needing rehearsals. I've always liked Terry Garoghan's 'Brighton', but everybody has to know the words. An it doesn't help that there are a few versions about and some (the 'passion like fire' one) are complete shit and a total embarrassment.

I always liked the anti-tourist one to the tune of 'Two Lovely Black Eyes'

Day trippers go home
Day trippers go home!
Get back on your bus
Leave Brighton to us
Just f*** off and leave us alone!

We need some proper manly football songs. I suggest something by Take That. Also a cover of 'Gay Bar' by Electric Six.

In fact, Gay Bar could work:

Gus... he likes tippy-tappy football,
he likes tippy-tappy football,
he likes tippy-tappy football, football, football...

The Albion songbook contains many classics, you don't always have to go looking for the new and overworked, also as a rule songs about particular players, unless they are genuine cultural icons (ie Wardy) rarely catch on. As one song starts "if you know your history..." then you would know there are literally dozens of tunes we can call upon, some unique to us, some are our take on footie classics. One number I penned myself many years ago could have had a relevant outing on Saturday...."we went up to Wembley in '83, to beat Man Utd and make history..."

FCUM have a few things going for them in terms of creating an atmosphere. They were mostly middle aged blokes, most of whom like a beer, are immersed in football culture and seemed to have a collective set of cultural reference points. They take the pre-match pub atmosphere and carry it on in the ground, there's been many a time when a pub has rocked pre-match with Albion fans trawling through our greatest hits, get in the ground and it's that awful dirge of Albiiiiion Albiiiiion, as someone has already posted there is a much better "Albion!" chorus.

The loss of the Goldstone and North Stand should not be underestimated. Fan culture needs a space in which to thrive, for likeminded people to gather and for humour to flourish, all seaters and Withdean in particular do not provide a great environment for this. Yes FCUM managed it, but their act is honed on the terraces of non-league football.

It's no surprise that many of today's chants and songs lack the originality and humour of the 60's, 70's and even 80's. Many working class poets have been priced out of grounds, the new genration of fans will have no knowledge of glam rock which inspired many chants, and we might as well blame the X factor as well.

For inspiration try and get a copy of "Dicks Out", a great book which chronicles the songs and their history of every English and Scottish club. The title coming of course from a Fulham chant aimed at one of their previous chairman.

Shoreham-by-Sea
Calde whoever you may be,
you should be king in your own country,
But you're here with us in Sussex by the Sea
and you turned down the skum from St Marys

Feel free to adapt

THAT is excellent. However, why do we always go into panic mode after a poor performance? We're even panicking our SONGS aren't any good now?

In a pile of football shirts
I doubt that's ever going to happen to be honest but I think a good start would be to sing:

Now is the time for marching
Now let your hearts be gay
Hark to the merry bugles
Sounding along our way
So let your voices ring, my boys,
And take the time from me
And I'll sing you a song, as we march along,
Of Sussex by the Sea.

Leading into... ALTOGETHER NOW

Instead of the usual into of der der der der der.

That would be excellent, perhaps our singing section could do with some lessons, or perhaps, horror of horrors, we should get a cheerleader, standing at the front, facing backwards, with megaphone, they do it over there, so why not do it here?

I can't believe they had a Carpenters song! For months at work I've been singing to myself a version I made up to On Top of The World, but thought it was too GAY to be a football song:

We're on the top of the league
looking down on Southampton
and the only explantion I can find
is that, Gus Poyet
ever since hes been around
has got us playing total football on the ground

The last line definitely needs working on, but I still love humming it to myself.

Really really like that Conboy, ive edited it slightly mainly because you were missing a line but i can imagine that being sung loud and proud at away games in particular!

Also Southampton can be changed to "The Palace" as and when we move above them and if Gus leaves im sure we can fit another managers name in.
Also should we slip from our current lofty position just change the first line to
"Were on top of the world"

Well played Conboy:thumbsup::ascarf:

Great one!
No problem ending with a last lines "......is that since he's been here, we've been moving *X* points clear, Gus has put us on the top of the league"

If we did nick Sloop John B it could be made quite topical with Falmer.

So hoist up the Falmer Arch or something.

That song or not, something about Falmer/Amex and going home would be good.

So hoist up the Falmer Sail
See how the main sail sets
Call for Poyet ashore, let me go home (let me go home)

I wanna go home
I wanna hoo-ooome, Withdean's the worst trip
I've ever been on

Am trying to think of a pop song that has the word Bright in the chorus that can be adapted (Other than Bright eyes because that never took off)

i might have a go on this Bob Marley CLASSIC. Will we get away with changing "right" to "Brighton?"

Don't worry about a thing,
'Cause every little thing gonna be all right.
Singin': "Don't worry about a thing,
'Cause every little thing gonna be all right!"

Rise up this mornin',
Smiled with the risin' sun,
Three little birds
Pitch by my doorstep
Singin' sweet songs
Of melodies pure and true,
Sayin', "This is my message to you-ou-ou:"

Don't worry about a thing,
'Cause every little thing gonna be all right.
Singin': "Don't worry about a thing,
'Cause every little thing gonna be all right!"

Rise up this mornin',
Smiled with the risin' sun,
Three little birds
Pitch by my doorstep
Singin' sweet songs
Of melodies pure and true,
Sayin', "This is my message to you-ou-ou:"

Singin': "Don't worry about a thing, worry about a thing, oh!
Every little thing gonna be all right. Don't worry!"
Singin': "Don't worry about a thing" - I won't worry!
"'Cause every little thing gonna be all right."

Singin': "Don't worry about a thing,
'Cause every little thing gonna be all right" - I won't worry!
Singin': "Don't worry about a thing,
'Cause every little thing gonna be all right."
Singin': "Don't worry about a thing, oh no!
'Cause every little thing gonna be all right!

Ok,.. how about,..... Goodnight Irene ( of Bristol Rovers fame),... but cannabalised to include Goodbye Withdean instead.... just a thought.

or,... in an attempt at a witty response to the usual Gay/Poof/queer stuff they throw around,.... the chorus of Tom Robinson, Glad to be Gay,....

My aim in life is now to get the south stand bouncing along to this number...

[yt]ZBR2G-iI3-I[/yt]

First I was afraid, I was petrified,
Kept thinking we would never cope with El-Abd in the side,
But then he played so many games, in which he proved me wrong,
And I grew strong, no Virgo there to hoof it long,

Now Calde's back, from outer space,
He left St Mary's back to here, noting the errors of his ways,
And even though he's been a cock, Poyet stayed with Glenn Murray,
With him and Ashley Barnes up front, we'd only lost one in the league

Gus don't go, we need you more,
Don't turn around now; we've got a quality back four,
Weren't you the one who brought Kazenga to the side?
We're not ungrateful; d'ya think we'd rather we were shite?
Oh no, not I. I will survive.
Oh, as long as you don't do a runner, I know we'll be alright,
Tony Bloom's got cash to give, and we've still got Kishishev,
I'll survive, I will survive.

Oat-way!

It took all the strength I had, not to fall apart,
When Woking came to town and you chose Gary Hart,
And I spent oh so many nights, just feeling sorry for Tom. Elph,
His game was fine, but Greer came in to boss the line
And Dicker's been, somebody new,
His passing's been amazing, Elliot Bennett too,
Even Sandaza's had his moments, at the cost of Glenn Murray,
But you can't argue with two goals and a last minute penalty,

Gus don't go, we need you more,
Abandon us now, and we will never f***ing score,
Weren't you the one who brought the fight in to the side,
We used to crumble, we used to lay down and die,
Oh no, not I. I will survive.
Oh as long as we get back our form, I know we'll be alright,
Tony Bloom's got cash to give, and we've still got Kishishev,
We will survive, we will survive.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh....

Gus don't go, we need you more
We like your football, we like it when it's on the floor,
And if we're being honest, you're easy on the eye,
You're unlike Russell, you look quite sexy in a tie,
Oh no, not I. I will survive,
Oh, as long as you don't do a runner, I know we'll be alright,
Tony Bloom's got cash to give, and we've still got Kishishev,

We will survive, we will survive....

this - print the lyrics off get them handed round - get the pa to find a dubbed version of i will survive - and fanny's yer mothers sister
