Can't be arsed to do all the ratings, but I though the performances from el abd, elphick, painter and sparrow were legendary.

So Smith had two assists but only gets a 6 because he "looks a little lightweight"?

Oh come on, give the lad a chance. His first proper opportunity in the first team and he performed really well.

Incidentally, I didn't think he looked too lightweight when he held off two Swindon players before laying the ball off for Sparrow's first.

Not going to do ratings, but just a few points I'd like to add.

I think Ankergren did well seeing as he hasn't had a pre-season. That's difficult even for a goalkeeper. I thought his distribution was really good.

El-Abd had an awesome game. He made an absolute mess of their Togan international. I thought his passing was decent too.

Painter was absolutely class. Brilliant defensively and going forwards he was very important! He linked up so well with the likes of Sparrow and Smith, playing some lovely passing football. He was really key to the way we played as he got himself in good positions where he could recieve the ball (even from Ankergren) and kept it on the deck/ran it forwards.

Sparrow seriously impressed. 2 class finishes and he didn't stop running all day. Got very involved with the passing football and used the ball well.

Smith was good. I think his best play came when we were making short passes to feet, like the build up for the first goal. Several times him, Painter and Sparrow were involved in little passing triangles that really opened up play.

Kish and Nav were absolute beasts. Nav looks in really good condition and Kishishev is built like a tank. Both are positionally brilliant, they were putting in key tackles all game. They also both know how to pass a football. I thought that the job these two did for the team yesturday was immense, they are going to be key players for us, especially when we play the better teams.

It beats me as well why some on here think Smith is lightweight ?

Mainly because it resulted in him being knocked off the ball and giving away possession on a number of ocassions.

If I am honest having now seen the goals on TV I would have given him a '7', as he did play a part in both. Had a pillar obscuring my viewe for the first and didn't pick recognise him for the second.

That tackle back Elphick on Ball (?) in the first half was IMMENSE. Brilliant old-fashioned crunch of a challenge..

Under your skin.
Ankergren - 7/10 - Could have been sent off but apart from that looked pretty good, decent enough kicking for someone who didn't know his team mates.

Elphick - 8/10 - After a poor start to last season I was worried he might have a bad game but he was a rock at the back. Kept Austin quiet all game.

El-Abd - 7/10 - Pretty Solid but made some stupid tackles, with a different ref he could have seen red for his tackle on Pericard.Don't think he will start much when Greer is back.

Calderon - 7/10 -
Supprised to see Gus gave him the Captains armband. Typical Calderon game, good when defending, bombing forward when we got the ball.

Painter - 8/10 - Best defender on the pitch. Great tackling, great link up play with Smith and Bennett. Can't believe we got him for free. Best LB in this division.

Navarro - 7/10 - Protected the back 4 and let Kishi and Sparrow attack, brilliant through-ball at the start of the 2nd half. Going to be a big player this year.

Sparrow - 10/10 - Box-to-Box, made some brilliant tackles, broke up play and scored twice, both of them very good goals. I'm glad Swindon got Prutton, we got Sparrow instead.

Smith - 7/10 - Made the wrong pass on a number of occasions and looked a bit lightweight, One for the future though, couple of nice 1-2s with Painter, Bennett and Sparrow.

Kishishev - 8/10 -
Cracking signing, brings experience to the team and always managed to find room.

Bennett - 6/10 - Hard working but never got a chance to shine. Needs to stop all this short corner stuff though.

Barnes - 5/10 - He isn't a lone striker, needs to try and stay on his feet a bit more though, worked very hard though and managed to put himself about.

Subs.

Dicker - 7/10 - Looked good when he came on, glad to see we have strength in depth in Midfield.

Hart - 7/10 - Did a great job when he came on, gave 110%. Slotted into the RB slot when Calderon pushed forward.

REF - 4 - Shit, not going to complain though.

Fans - Decent numbers, pretty loud at times, odd patches of silence. Typical Brighton away fans. GOSBTS was slower and the "Gus Poyet my lord chant" showed we can sing a slower song. Hopefully we can sign GOSBTS at that pace this season.

Ankergren 6 - Dropped an easy catch early on, which could have been costly but wasn't, and then should have done better with the freekick, it would have been easier to turn it wide of the post than it was to pat it back into play. His handling was superb, apart from the one incident, and his confidence on the ball was fantastic.
Calderon 7 - He didn't attack AT ALL, which is such a shame considering I'd billed him as a swashbuckling full back who would spend the game pretty much as a right sided forward rather than defender! But got the job done with his usual effortless style and class.
Painter 8 - Really fond of him. Calm and classy in posession, hard and strong in the tackle. He knows the game inside out, he knows when to cover around and when to stay wider of the centre back and his experience is crucial. Can't afford to get injured though.
Elphick 8- Some incredibly stern challenges, especially the cruncher on Ball, absolutely perfect tackle. He dominated both Dossevi and then Pericard in the air and was only toubled once by the pesky little shit that is Austin. Masterful performance.
El-Abd 7 - Liability. Very solid performance, he defended with his usual strong and simple style which is effective when he gets it right. But a stronger referee might have sent him off for that lunge.. it wasn't dissimilar from his moment against the MK Dons last season. Good backup, but Greer will walk into the team.
Bennett 7 - Disapointing performance in that he rarely troubled. But he is so classy on the ball and walked past Amankwaah and Rose at times, he looks like the type of player who takes a little while to get into his stride.. so while he's doing that if he puts in a performance like yesterday, I won't be complaining.
Smith 6 - Played a big part in both the goals, and all credit to him for that. But he's still learning the game and is all potential and less substance at the moment, but with patience and game time, he'll be a very good player. And he tracked back as often as he could, so he has work rate aswell as creative talent.
Kishishev 6 - I thought he looked stunning against Aberdeen, but a bit laboured yesterday. He put in a good shift and Swindon's midfield never got on top of ours, he was important in that. But on the ball he didn't really do much, and I was pleased to see him brought off on the hour mark. Quality signing though, and adds alot to our squad.
Navarro 7 - Influential in our midfield, gets on the ball and makes us tick. He must be one of the first names on the team sheet every game and if he performs like this every week, we won't let in too many goals from the opposition's midfield, because the game just never gets past him.
Sparrow 8 - Quality goals, and a really quality player. He looks to be easily the best player in our squad, he's got it all. Championship quality central midfielder who won't want to be at this level more than 1 season... Genuine class, what a coup of a signing.
Barnes 6 - Their bald centre back, Cuthbert, is slow and cumbersome so if we could have played a ball down his outside for Barnes to chase, then he might have had more luck. But against him, and Lescinel, in aerial battles, he was always going to have a tough game. He held the ball up well for our second goal, and worked very hard from the first whistle to the last.

Thought Ashleeee did really well today. He didn't get much of the ball but still set up both goals with the second being a really well waited through ball. He worked really hard, Gets a 7.5 from me.

The thing that strikes me most about a lot of our players since Poyet has taken over is the time we seem to buy when we have the ball. Navarro did it exceptionally in the first half. I've never seen a Brighton team look so calm in position of the ball, even when placed under strong pressure from the opposition. Intelligent football that's really pleasing to watch.

I completely agree. It's so good to see the entire team (even the goalkeeper!) looking so comfortable in possession.

Casper 6 - Didn't have a lot. Spilled a couple.

Calderon 6 - Good going forward, caught the wrong side of his winger a few times though.
Painter 7
El-Abd 7
Elphick 7

Bennett 7
Sparrow 8
Navarro 6
Kishishev 6
Smith 7

Barnes 5 Not a loan striker and did not get involved in the game.

Dicker 6
Hart 5

A better result than performance but as encouraging a first game as I can remember for a while. I thought at times we could have been less rushed but, although Swindon had a lot of the ball I thought we defended the edge of the box well.

Can't be bothered to do ratings but Elphick, Navarro and Sparrow were superb. If there are any Navarro doubters left then that performance alone should dispel that. Nothing got through Tommy all game, got stuck in early and after that their striker with the headband went missing. Sparrow obviously slotted into Crofts role so naturally, a very exicting midfield shaping up.

Its a shame Painter mis controlled the ball across our 6 yard box for their goal as I thought he was brilliant.

The midfield looked good. Bennett and Smith change wings a few times which is good to see. Smith, two assists, you cant go wrong. Sparrow got forward well, two great goals. We needed that as Barnes didnt really have a sniff at goal. He got frustrated. And took a shot from a very narrow angle, where he should have passed the ball across the 6 yard line for Bennett to tap in. Navarro look calm with the ball, even under pressure from Swindons midfield. He did a couple of class turns in the middle of the park to out fox them and spread a nice pass wide

I was impressed with Navarro WITH the ball but felt he didn't break up the opposition like he normally does.

Swindon did have a lot of possession and were controlling the game for long spells.

Ankergren 7 - not inspiring, but looked alright I suppose - would like to see their goal again
Calderon - 6 - looked useful going forward, but was beaten quite a few times by their winger
Elphick - 8 - immense in the air, but again, I'd like to see their goal again and see if it was him who passed it across the goal
El-abd - 8 - faultless. Going to be hard to drop him for Greer?
Painter - 8 - class, class act. So good defensively and composed too.
Bennett - 6 - quiet, but then he was on the left so you'd expect that
Navarro - 7 - had a storming first hour where he seemed to be at the heart of everything, went a bit quiet towards the end - lucky with one stray free kick!
Sparrow - 9 - brilliant. More performances like that and we've got a QUALITY player.
Smith - 7 - good running and decent link up for the second, although as others have said, looked like he needed to beef up a bit
Kishishev - 7 - added a bit more "solidness" to the midfield. Encouraging.
Barnes - 6 - can't fault him really, no service and with a lightning fast defender marking he did well all things considered - perhaps should have shot earlier when he had a chance in the second half.

Dicker - 7 - added a bit more variety to our passing I thought, good sub
Hart - again, totally agree with the decision to bring him on knowing how strong he can be defensively

Spot on.

Saved me a load of typing.

To be fair though you only have to look at the best players in the world at the moment where yuo can't walk for giant, bulky creative midfielders: Xavi, Iniesta, Messi, Ozil, Schnieder, Robben, Fabregas, Modric
