Player Ratings v Crewe

Basil Fawlty

Don't Mention The War
Kuipers 6- Solid enough, made a fantastic save in the first half. Terrible parry out in the second half, from the free-kick what nearly cost a goal.

Whing 6- Solid yet again, distribution of a cross still very poor.

Butters 7- Got out paced once, but very solid throughout. Won most of the headers, and took his goal nicely.

Elphick 8- Very solid again, didn't put a foot wrong all game.

Richards 6- Takes alot of time for him to settle down in a match, looked rather nervous on the ball. Got better in the second half through still very worrying. IMO.

Robinson 7- Made some decent runs, passing was good. Still lacking a trick or two to get passed his man.

El-Abd 7- Won most tackles, and his heading has improved. Still not my number one choice in the middle through.

Thomson 7- Looks comfortable on the ball. passing is very slick, decent buy IMO.

Cox 8- Corner delivery fantastic, made some fantastic runs and got in a wonderful cross for Murray second.

Forster 9- Deserved a goal, ran his socks off yet again.

Murray 8- Absolutely brillant, held the ball up well. Passed the ball well, and his second goal was quite simply fantastic. BARGAIN!

Subs:

Martot 5- Didn't do enough when he came on.

Mcfaul 5- What was the point?!

Gatting 5- What was the point yet again?!

Not neccessarily all transfers, but this particular one

Still utter rubbish. Lloyd goes out and looks at players in his role as scout, he reports back what he's seen to Wilkins and other members of the management team who will discuss players, possibly even go watch them as well. Wilkins then goes to the board and tells them who he wants. Wilkins might not have found Murray but he would have had final say on if the club make an approach or not.

To think otherwise shows a real lack of how football works. No manager is going to accept a player they haven't ok'd being bought in.

McGhee had Turienzo forced on him so wouldn't put it past DK doing it again.
Just because something gets repeated a lot doesn't make it true.

And Withdean Wanderer is chatting absolute shit.

Kuipers - 7 - one knightmare that will no doubt be claimed to involeve an EW-Abd backpass. Fantastic save that was even more important given the scoreline at the time and I was behind the goal so will say it WAS grilliant and not a cowd pleaser

Whing 6.5 atacked well, some very good tackles but, no he gets 7

Elphick 7 solid

Butters 8 always in the right place and even scored with his less favoured right foot

richards 6 ok but has a bads habit of slicing out around the halfway line

Cox 6. ok without really showing his full ability. won a couple of headers against all odds but wish he'd cross with his left foot

Thompson 7 very assured and was impressed, got stuck in and played simply, nearl lost a mark when he hesitated prior to firing well wide with his left, maybe thought he was Hammond and wanted to pass sideways ;-)

El-Abd 8 best i've seen from him, all I need to say

Robinson 6 in and out of the game and we know he can do better

Forster 8 keeps going, deniedf a clear pen and loooked gutted not to score

Murrey 10 not seen this for a while have we

I really don't get why people are being so harsh on Martot the whole time - he's not particularly flashy but he's solid defensively. He doesn't run forward as much as Robinson, but frankly Jakey proved today that he really has very little in terms of quality, he is far far too often not delivering the quality delivery needed from the wing, and as he is never going to be particularly solid defensively he doesn't merit a place in the side.

Kuipers - 6 - Good save, and a terrible parry (after which he blamed his defenders for allowing the man through for the rebound!)

Richards - 7 - Lets nothing passed and often shows quality on the ball, I would like to see him getting forward more often
Butters - 7 - More solid than he has been in previous appearances this season, and somehow also scrambled in a goal!
Elphick - 8 - The new Butters, lets nothing past!
Whing - 7 - A consistent performer.

Cox - 8 - Looked more dangerous than he has done for some time, created a lot on the left wing.
El-Ebd - 7 - Suprisingly solid and almost error free, does need to make sure that he doesn't make some cheap errors against stronger teams though.
Thomson - 8 - Not only a rock in the centre of midfield but showed today that he has some quality going forward as well, going to be a great signing.
Robinson - 5 - Yet again, far more energy than final product, I think his spell in the side must be coming to an end.

Forster - 7 - Looked much more comfortable than he has done for a while, with a quality striker playing alongside him. Does need to start scoring again though!
Murray - 9 - What a great signing this looks to be! Had great touches on the ball and proved he can also finish. What a second goal!

Subs:
Martot - 6 - Already discussed, does need to get forward more but would be much better than Jakey were we defending a 1-0 lead
Gatting & McFaul - no time to make an impact (though bloody hell McFaul is tall!)

Don't be a dick, dear Mr Kraay. My 'marking system' is incredibly simple. Your confusion was caused totally by the fact you were totally unable to distinguish the difference between the words average and standard. An AVERAGE contribution to a match gets a 5. On that scale, a STANDARD goalkeeping performance, bearing in mind it is the toughest position in which any mistake is magnified, gets a 6. That's why, most weeks, Michel gets a 6 from me. VERY rarely do I go higher or lower. It is the other positions that have the scope to vary so much. So, if we lose, Michel tends to end up getting a high mark in comparison to others, if we win he's usually lower/mid range. There is no bias involved, and every week I am consistent. Most people on here just do newspaper style ratings, which mean they only award 6, 7, and 8. What the hell's the point in having the other numbers?! At least I am using the whole range of numbers by starting at 5's and working each way.

Anyway, you only make that comment because a) you showed an embarrassing lack of understanding last time we had this discussion, and b) can't cope with the fact that Hammond has left, and that when he was here he was invariably shit. If I gave him a 3, it's 'cos he was damn well worth it:thumbsup:

If not making a distinction between 'standard' and 'average' makes me a dick, then so be it.

I was just pointing out that your system involves giving Michel a higher mark for an average/standard performance than anyone else. Thank you for clarifying once more that this IS the case. Do we really need to trawl back to Henderson's time to see if it is 'the goalkeeper' rather than FDM in particular who enjoys the special Badger Bonus?

Hammond is history now, and I'm not interested in going over it, but I doubt that the scouts from Sheff Wed or Colchester put a 3 on may of their reports.

You really don't help yourself on here, do you? 'Withdean Wanderer' has already become a catch-all phrase for unnecessary misery and ungraciousness in the face of optimism and postivity, don't let it become one for fairy-tales as well.

Anyhoo,

Kuipers 6 - Good on crosses, kicking excellent, one save where he could have done better in the second half almost gifting Crewe a goal.

Whing 6 - Fairly reliable. Great overhead kick almost opening the scoring.
Elphick 7 - Solid.
Butters 7 - Solid.
Richards 5 - Good in defence, far too many clearances into touch.

Cox 7 - Never stopped running - involved in all three goals. Very tenacious setting up the third.
El-Abd 7.5 - Midfield is his best position. Led the midfield, snapping at their players, getting good tackles in. In this showing, might be hard to dislodge once Fraser and Reid are back.
Thomson 7 - Linked up well with El-Abd. These two didn't get under each other's feet like Hammond and O'Callaghan did.
Robinson 5 - Largely ineffective. Won some corners, but don't recall him getting too many crosses in.

Forster 7 - Linked up excellently with Murray. This could be the start of something good.
Murray 7 - Linked up excellently with Forster. This could be the start of something good.

Subs:
Martot 5 - Seen better, seen worse. Didn't do too much wrong.
McFaul / Gatting - No time

Ref 7 - Was an easy game to referee, could have - should have - booked Murray. But the bet refs are the ones you don't notice.

Kuipers 6. One great save, but did not look confident with some of the back passes.

Whing 7. Good defending and could have scored a couple from set pieces. Good to see him getting forward.

Elphick 8. Great.

Butters 7. Best performance for a while. Looked solid except for one time in the second half when a Crewe player left him standing.

Richards 6. Maybe not his best performance, but a classy player.

Robinson 5. Not at his best. Was he fully fit?

Thomson 8. Impressive. Hardly a misplaced pass. Quietly efficient.

El-Abd 8. A really strong performance and showed he can pass the ball effectively.

Cox 7. Finally some good corners. Has he been given detention and told to take a hundred corners?

Forster 8. Excellent again. Deserved a goal. His energy is impressive.

Murray 9. Great in the air; excellent control on the ground. Wow! I know it was "only" Crewe, but what a debut!

Subs
Martot 5. Did nothing of note.
Others not on long enough.

Manager 8.

El-abds best ever game for us, he showed strength, command of area and always played the ball on the floor(unlike Richards). I reckon if he can start performing like that every week playing the holding role, we really will be on course for the play-offs. Its what we have needed over the last few months, a disciplined centre-midfielder who sits back and supports the back-four. Yes I know he can make mistakes but in a position where he has better support around he is sure to improve as a player. Murray and Forster? could be the start of great things to come, oh how i wish Forsters age would start reducing!, judging by his pace i wouldn't be suprised if it is!!

Hendo was slagged week after week for exactly what Kuipers did on sat, parrying the ball out to a strikers feet !!!

Lucky for Michel that the striker was gash, and why he blamed defenders for it is unbelivable.

Why is this so hard to believe?

Lloyd recommended Murray to Knight, Knight watched him and bought him.

I doubt that's the usual procedure for players, but in this instance it was.
