I think the one real highlight that came out of the game yesterday was Bridcutt's performance - never seemed to stop running, always wanted the ball and went in for pretty much ever challenge. Definitely MOM for me.

On a train...
As I don't go regularly to Withdean these days as I work most Saturdays I'm not too up on how we play week in week out, so here's my rating based on what I saw yesterday.

Brezovan 6
Painter 6
Tarricco 7
Elphick 5
Dunk 6
Kishishev 6
Bridcutt 5
Baz 4
Bennett 5
Barnes 5
Murray 4

Hart 5
Sandaza 7
Battipiedi 5

I thought Sandaza looked up for it when he came, and was trying to get the fans going. Murray wasn't really at the game from what I saw.

I think a lot of these are lower simply because we didn't win.

Defensively we weren't challenged too much, but on FC united's first serious attack they scored, which doesn't reflect well on the defence, I guess, but it happens all the time. For the rest of the game the defence handled their duties just fine. Unfortunately, we seemed to lose our structure after the goal and took too long to get it back.

Our midfield bossed the game. Bridcutt was heavily involved, and when we were so dominant in the first and last 30mins or so, he was involved in so much. I was surprised to see Kishishev in the line up, I thought he might be given time off to recover from the recent run of games when we haven't been able to rest him. I was impressed with his contribution considering. The midfield were well supported in attack by Tarrico and Painter. Bennett made a good contribution, but should not have taken the penalty when Barnes was on the pitch (and given he has now missed his last two, I would avoid letting him take them where possible).

Attack, Murray had an off day. He was being outmuscled any time he was on the ball and falling over so much and this time not in a free kick winning way, he messed up a great chance when he tried to lob the keeper and again when he swung at air. Barnes wasn't much (if any) better, but did manage to work the keeper. When Sandaza was stood on the side lines before the second half kicked off I knew Murray was coming off (partly because I thought he had such a poor game, partly because Gus doesn't seem to see him undroppable as some fans do, partly because the comments of gus regarding his consistency, and gus's habit of playing Barnes so much).

I didn't thin Baz was that bad, but he isn't excelling yet. I worry that it may take more time for Baz and Batti to settle into the game than most fans will give them.

Overall, I think the only thing missing was a finishing touch. I didn't think their keeper was as particularly great as some people seem to be suggesting. He made a good save from a near post downward header in the first half, and he saved the penalty (which I thought was a bad penalty, I could see the keeper going that way before bennett kicked it).

against a team at least FOUR divisions lower than us.

How can that possibly be an above average League One performance, which many seem to be rating it as ??

Because the defence and midfield can have an average league one game, and we can still not win if the forwards aren't performing. Our forwards can have an average league one game and we can still not win if our defence are below par. Because the result can be dictated by only a few of our players having below par performance.

Then there's that old chestnut "the magic of the FA cup" where underdogs raise their game and perform at a level that belies their league position.

Because maybe their 'keeper had the game of his life in making a couple of World class saves and our strikers miss firing?

All yesterday highlighted was how much we need an out & out goal scorer, just a shame they come at a premium price.
