I'll be absolutely baffled if Stephens starts ahead of Alzate again based on today's showing.

I can’t see any games in the rest of January or February I’d start him in but any tricky away matches or Amex top six visits and I’d have him in the team in a heart beat.

Think it’ll be Pröpper & Alzate (or Bissouma) as a central pair for the next month or so with a fit again Mooy as an AM, there are lots of points to be won by playing like we did against Bournemouth and Palace (70mins).

Dimly handed them a pen and his sending off in the first 5 minutes, miraculously escaping, no one knows why.

The usually inept Dominic Calvert-Diver ran past him as if he didn’t exist for several chances.

Poor again today, slow
and miles away from playing for England.

I think DC-L is looking a decent prospect but, apart from that, I agree. And yet NSC's finest claim that Webster is slower than their grandmother, despite outpacing DC-L over 40 metres.

Everton were all over us in the first half, and had numerous chances in the second half too, although we were saved by Ryan. We had no midfield. Fortunately pro-active Potter sorted it out at half-time but he probably should have done it earlier (he's changed things in the first half before). Second half better but, despite our decent chances, the scoreline ultimately flattered us.

We were outplayed for 75 minutes, awoke after that. Maty Ryan was a hero today, brilliant.

Away from our biased either way comments, the BBC stated it was a dominant Everton performance and we were poor.

The same BBC match report that said Brighton hadn’t won away in the league since the opening day of the season....

Maupay bullied all game. Made Keane look good. Ryan and Alzate excellent. Others poor. Tom Davis good for them - never rated him before. Albion fans good. Nothing from the home fans. Absolutely zip. Quieter than an Amex cup game

Ryan: 9 - Kept us in it.

Duffy: 5 - not his day at all.
Dunk: 6 - we've seen him a lot worse than that but not at the races. Lucky to be on the pitch longer than 5 minutes.
Webster: 5.5. None of the defence showered themselves in glory but Webster wasn't terrible today - definitely better than some scores suggest.

Montoya: 5 - our WB's tend to get caught v high up the pitch and Montoya was culpable a few times.
Stephens 4.5 - I can remember one or two nice passes but very little else
Propper: 6 - was 'ok'. Nothing more.
Bernardo: 5 - Can do better but struggled today.

Ali J: 6 - surprised to see him hauled off but struggled to impose himself, even though what he did do I thought he did well.
Maupay: 6 - ran and ran but was always going to struggle on his own.
Trossard: 5 - anonymous until he hit the bar in the 1st, then back to anonymous again.

Subs:
Gross: 5 - one good bit of work shortly after he came on but didn't realise he was on after that
Murray: 6 - SO close to getting us a point, looked hungry and with a point to prove but not enough service to do it.
Alzate: 7 - we looked more dangerous with him on, even though he does frustrate me when he doesn't release the ball earlier.

A poor day at the office and we were pants the first half - definite improvement in the 2nd but we missed Mooy's presence and Connolly's runs.

Ryan 7 - All very good apart from the corner debacle where I think his mind must have been somewhere else. Very lucky to get away with that. Third time VAR has saved him recently from bad mistakes

Dunk 5 - Below par today from him but under so much pressure as our midfield was dominated so much
Duffy 5 - See above
Webster 5 - And again

Bernardo 7 - Improving
Stephens 5 - They kept popping up free in the space between our back four and midfield which is his territory. Seemed to go missing today
Pröpper 5 - Today was one of those times where you think he's not good enough if we are to reach mid-table stability. Their players were obviously better than him.
Montoya 5 - Feels like we're making do with him until we get a better option

Ali J 5 - Not as good as recently as he just couldn't get into the game
Maupay 5 - Things weren't sticking with him today and we really needed him
Trossard 6- Unlucky not to score but generally not as good as when he comes on as sub

Alzate 7 - His quality improved us
Gross 6 -
Murray 6 - One good effort and one howler. We know he takes a few games to start producing which he's not getting.

Weak performance until Ancelotti made defensive subs which changed the game and we should have nicked a point.

We really missed Mooy.

I only watched stream and then MOD (bad fan) but I thought Webster looked lethargic several times he was jogging back after play had past him

There was one situation that really made me furious. Some Everton player crossed the ball from the right and it went past all the players. Webster then started jogging - inside the penalty box! - to take care of the ball and instead one of their players made a sprint and took it. Awful and unacceptable and he is going to hear it.

Generally dont think he was worse than the other defenders though. Dont know how many times Duffy and Dunk got the ball in situations with a lot of time and space on their hands and just cluelessly kicked it to a throw in or corner.

Yes this happened a lot but mainly because they had no options. We really weren't trying hard enough consistently to give our teammates options.

Bit harsh on Trossard I feel.

Bit difficult to have a good game when you have the ball constantly passed behind you and when you do have it the only player to pick out is Maupay who is being marked by 3 players.

Was involved in 2 of our best 3 chances.

Still needs to improve but when we play to his strengths he looks a very good player.
