james- 5....looked NERVOUS at times, wasn't overly confident with him after he made a save with his SHOULDER....could do nowt for the goal...still the FLAIRNIACS choice

johnson 6.5.....pretty decent, offered options going forward and worked well in the johnson/lennon combo...decent defender too

terry- 8 .....solid

ferdinand- 8.....solid

cole- 5....gave the ball away in both dangerous areas and via aimless long balls....don't think he offered much more than creating space going forward

lennon- 7.....looked dangerous, needs consistancy in his crossing and then he'll be shit hot

lampard- 7....starting to replicate his club form for his country, thought he was decent but could still do with stamping his authority on games like we all know he's capable of

barry- 6....noticed him giving the ball away in a potentially dangerous position, apart from that he was the usual dependable self and did his job well...definitely think he should be first choice defensive midfielder

gerrard- 7.....not as good as he was against slovakia..still good, however i can't help thinking that good opposition would suss him out fairly quickly while he's played on left midfield

crouchy babes- 8....did all that was asked of him, took his goal well

rooney- 9......everything that was good came through him.....has he got eight lungs or something?!

subs:

bex..7
swp..6
jagz..6

James -4 Never completely safe, doesn't instill confidence
Johnson - 8 Excellent, was involved a lot and practically flawless with every possession.
Terry - 9 Composes the back line, and gets forward too. Indispensable.
Ferdinand - 8 Gets better with each game
Cole - 2 poseur. Strides purposefully forward, but only when in loads of space, a liability
Gerrard - 7 gave width to the left and cuts in effectively
Barry - 5 too obvious when physically aggressive
Lennon - 5 Not effective enough and always goes wide
Lampard - 7 good worker, constructive passing
Crouch - 8 Always a handful, good threat with feet as well as head
Rooney - 4 Poor passes, dodgy tackling
Beckham - 6 glimpses of his high standards only
Jagielka - 5 hard to grade, gave away a foul but marked his man alright
SWP - 6 not enough play this time, prefer him to Lennon though

Gerrard - 5 - very quiet

didn't these guys link up to score our winner

:nuffSaid:

Why all the 5 out of tens for James? He barely had a thing to do tonight, when called upon performed fine and I thought he was just a bit unlucky with the shoulder-save.

If anyone deserves a 5 it should be Cashley Cole who managed to give the ball away FOUR times that I managed to count and Frank Lampard who once again did bugger all to contribute to the midfield battle as the game threatened to slip away from us in the second half.

James 7 - Did everything he had to do well, no chance with the goal.
Cole 6 - A little shaky in defence but always positive and looking to bomb forward.
JT 8 - Imperious at the back, a captains performance and popped up with an excellent finish for the winner.
Ferdinand 7 - Rock solid.
Johnson 7 - Looked to attack when possible, tidy on the ball.
Barry 6 - Got booked early and this took the edge of his game but good distruibution and discipline.
Lamps 8 - Got involved plenty, a joy to watch.
Stevie G 7 - Not a vintage performance butstill involced in most of what we did well. Faded 2nd half.
Lennon 8 - Skinned his full back time and time again, unlucky to be subbed.
Crouch 8 - Great finish for the opening goal, worked his socks off.
Wazza 9 - On fire in the first half, always looking to run at and commit players and excellent distribution, on this form he is unplayable.
Subs:
Becks 8 - Great balls in the box from set pieces and open play, he's still top dog in my book.
SWP 6 - Not really involved.

All in all a great night at Wembley, not a vintage performance but thoroughly deserved win and 3 points closer to the promised land of South Africa 2010.

:clap2:

James 6 - Looked shaky, didn't boss around his defence enough, in fact it seemed to be the other way around.
Cole 5 - Gave the ball away a few times, made some decent runs down the left but never actually does anything with the ball when he gets it (apart from hoof aimlessly)
Terry 8½ - Decent performance, won a key header for the first goal and scored the second (for which he gets a bonus half)
Ferdinand 8 - as Terry, decent performance
Johnson 8 - Best performance I've seen from him, looked very assured. Bodes well.
Barry 7 - Did a good job of covering the spaces left by the fullbacks. Seems the only midfielder who persistently chases back. Committed quite a few fouls but mostly out of necessity due to lack of cover.
Lampard 7½ - Capello has finally found a role for him in midfield. Did well, looks for short simple but FORWARD passes. Good at finding space, and was happy to bomb forward when we were chasing a goal towards the end.
Gerrard 6 - Quiet game, which is why he's marked down. Generally game with his running down the left and did pretty well when he saw the ball.
Lennon 7 - Positioning is good, dribbing is good. If only he had an end product.
Crouch 7½ - Battled gamely and won a fair bit in the air. Pretty thankless task playing as 'lone' striker (given the aerial balls which Rooney was never going to win), did pretty well. Gives us a different option to Heskey, would be good off the bench.
Rooney 8½ - Faded a bit in the second half, especially when Crouch went off and he had to play up front by himself. However first half was brilliant. Has temperament problems which are well documented, but that asides looked dangerous and caused problems for the opposition all over the pitch.

Subs:
Beckham 8 - lifts the whole stadium when he comes on, including the team. The fact that he's become Capello's go-to man speaks wonders. Great delivery for the second goal.
Wright-Philips 6 - wasn't on long enough; or didn't get involved enough for the time he was on!

Capello 9 - he has developed a good system, and the players look (finally, for the first time in years) like they know what they are doing. Is also developing plans B onwards for when things go wrong. Absolute chief.

Crowd 9 - the loudest I've heard Wembley. Been to quite a few games and the support is generally rubbish. Last night though I thought they were very good. Backed the players (none of the Cole booing nonsense) and I was very impressed when they booed the morons that interrupted the silence at the beginning.

James - 6, never fills me with confidence though
Johnson - 7
Cole - 5, cack.
Terry - 7
Ferdinand - 7
Barry - 6
Gerrard - 7
Lampard - 7
Lennon - 6 (Beckham - 7)
Crouch - 8 (SWP - 5)
Rooney - 8, although he could have gone for that tackle

Thought we looked good in the first half but nervous in the second. Always a good sign when a team can:

a - win when not at their best
b - raise the tempo when they need a goal

The defending for their goal was poor, Terry or Ferdinand should have attacked the ball and Gerrard didn't seem that effective, but otherwise I though we looked OK.

Still pisses me off when 90% of the corporate seats are empty until ten minutes into the second half but I guess that's football these days, sadly.

Think I agree with that. I went last night and thought the atmosphere was terrific, the fans didn't turn on the players as they would have done in the past, even when they scored.

Rooney was my MOM, played an absolute blinder and was spraying 70 yard passes to feet for fun. I thought he should have been sent off though. I haven't seen any replays or anything but from where I was sitting that tackle in the second half looked horrific! Was it as bad as it looked at the time?

I thought Capello got pretty much everything right, except perhaps brought Beckham on slightly too early. We slowed down to a halt from then on and looked more like old times "nervy" England sitting on a lead.

Luckily Fabio has instilled a winning mentality and I still felt (as with vs. Germany 1-1) we would nick it. We did.

Just want to say there was nothing wrong with Rooneys tackle. A freekick wasn't even given. *cough*

A very reckless challenge.

If it was made by one of their players on one of ours there would be an angry thread specifically about it this morning/last night.
