Brez - 6 Some good work but far too slow in his distribution and then even then his kicks and throws were poor.

Calderon - 7 Gets up and down well and always available. Brave header for the goal.
El Abd - 9 Awesome display. Strong in the air and in the challenge.
Greer - 7 Solid but was stifled in bringing the ball out like he usually does.
Mattock - 8 I like him more and more. He's as good a defender as Painter but equally good going forward.

Bridcutt - 6 Over run at times but still worked hard. He won't have come up against many midfielders better than Robson.
Navarro - 8 Excellent game. Good distribution and broke up play well. Couldn't do it all on his own though.
Buckley - 6 A couple of decent moments in the first half (although he wasted a great chance to open the scoring). He was well shackled in the 2nd half.
Barnes - 6 Not his best game. Nothing seemed to fall right for him.
Vicente - 8 Always wants the ball and is so direct. Maybe tried a little too hard to take on the entire 'Boro defence at times.

Vokes - 6 Did his best to hold up play with some effect. Not the best of service to him

Subs
CMS - 6 Not sure why he played wide. We may as well have kept Buckley on with LuaLua on the other side. Worked hard in what must be frustrating position for a striker.
LuaLua - 7 Always looks a threat and great corner for the goal. Should have started.

Brezovan 6 Couple of good saves, but I always get the feeling he could **** up
Calderon 7 Nice goal, great position, some good crosses to
Mattock 7 Had a good spell early in the second half - got forward well
Greer + El Abd 8 The fact that Emnes was generally quiet (except for the goal!) says a lot about these two
Bridcutt 6 - what he does he does well, but too limited
Navarro 6 - has baffled me all season why we play Nav and Bridcutt. One would be plenty, plus Razzaq
Vicente 7 - Boro were ready for him. Muscled off the ball, but still a class act
Buckley 6 - Not his best game, but for me, our best prospect
Barnes 6 - I'm not anti-Barnes as he does score goals. Loses the ball way too much though
Vokes 6 - Reminds me of Chris Wood. Ok, nothing special

Subs
CMS + Lua Lua 7 A good bet to run at tired defenders

I thought that was more a case of Mowbray and his lackies doing their homework. Ordinarily, he would roll it out to a defender, but 'boro always had three covering the front. I can remember one poor throw, but his kicking wasn't too bad. Always 50/50 really when hoofing it upfield.

Brezovan 7 - couple of very good saves when he held the ball.
Calde 7 - more solid in defence today and going forward
El Abd 8 - strong as an Ox
Greer 7 - reliable
Mattock 7 - decent performance
Bridders 7 - good 1st half, faded 2nd
Vicente 7 - moments of real quality but quite well shackled
Navarro 7 - steady and worked hard
Barnes 5 - i am a huge fan but off the pace today
Buckley 7 - game of 2 halves, faded in 2nd
Voakes 6 - doesn't win much in the air for a target man but worked hard

Subs

Lua Lua 7 - (for Buckley) - looked good, great corner for goal and defensively sound, something he has added to his game from Withdean
CMS 7 - lively performance. Would like to see more of him and Voakes together.

Credit to Albion as Boro, along with Forest they looked the best team here this season. Really impressed with Robson and Bailey in midfield.

Brezovan- 8

Mattock- 7
Greer- 7
El-Abd- 8 MOM
Calderon- 8

Bridcutt- 7
Navarro- 8
Vicente- 7
Buckley- 7

Barnes- 6
Vokes- 6

Vicente could have been a 9 if some of his stuff came off. He was also thinking way ahead of a few of our team. There was one moment where he was in yards of space, but old Barnsey passed it backwards.

Middlesborough were pretty decent. They were quick to close us down and dangerous on the break.

I thought Richard Smallwood was lucky not to get a yellow at the very least. Horrible little chap.

In fact he was booked, according to the BBC stats ...

Brez - 7.5 good handlig, though seemed unaware at times free kick given on the right so he threw it out left, scrambled across goal for a save in he first half. Unfairly criticised by sm around me when he kicked the ball low to a group of three brighton player who all stood and waited for it, as a brough player ran through them and collected it instead
Mattock - 7.5 one of his stronger performances, those his delivery needs more work, or his decision for delivery. Too often he played the wrong ball hitting high above everyone.
El Abd - 7 Solid
Greer - 7 Solid
Calderon - 7.5 good performance, key goal, didn't seem so much out of his depth this week (in previous weeks he's seemed desperate in is defending shirt pulling etc.
Buckley - 6.5 didn't get a chance to show his pace as much
Bridcutt - 6 poor game from him. He was too lightweight, constantly being out-muscled, more so than most of our team.
Barnes - 7 was all over the pitch supporting defensively, when he went off we seemed to be overrun in midfield
Navarro - 6.5 seemed to have an issue with el abd's positioning, but otherwise solid
Vicente - 7 not as influential, struggled to impose himself, but had a few decent runs and balls.
Vokes - 6.5 won a few headers, but wasn't able to bring them down and hold the ball up, only getting flick ons

CMS - 7 made a nuisance of himself, but it's like we don't want to get our opponents sent off. We work a full back until they are booked and then ease off on them.
Lualua - 6.5 one or two good runs, but not overly influential

I didn't think Vokes and CMS linked up very well, they weren't on the same page, passes and/or runs were never read properly. Hopefully they just need time.
I noted Bridcutt was particularly lightweight, but it seemed the whole team were to one degree or another, just Bridcutt noticeably so. Easily muscle ff the ball, easily baten in those challenges where both players kick the ball at the same time, etc.
The fans were particularly odd singing "dodgy keeper" at a keeper who doesn't have a history of mistakes, nor had he made any mistakes in his game, in fact he'd made a couple of good saves in the first half before the chants. They also seemed to criticise the wrong person with passes. The brezovan example above being one, but other times just as bad - underhit passes being blamed on the intended target, or intended targets not coming to meet the pass and the passer being blamed.

We seem to play zonal marking in defence, which appears to frustrate people. Our players track someone for a while then stop and leave him for another player to pick up and gets slaughtered for it. It seems like no one has caught on yet.

Brough taking off Emnes was a big help to us. He was, for me, man of the match. He won every ball played his way, was able to keep it despite attention from two or three defenders.

Brezovan 6 Couple of good saves, but loses a mark for his slow distribution of the ball late on. There's being casual, and there being just plain slow to realise what going on. Lord Gus was having kittens!
Calderon 7 Good performane and another goal
Greer 6 Shows how opinions differ, because I thought our central backs were given the run around today against a top class attack.
El Abd 6 Slightly better than Greer for a couple of his second half tackles, but not the answer at this level IMO
Mattock 8 By far the best of the defense.
Buckley 6 Never got going
Bridcutt 6 Out muscled for much of the game. His two game break might help him... and us
Navarro 8 MOM. Quietly got through a shit load of work today
Vicente 6 Not one of his best performances.
Barnes 5 Run of the par performance IMO. Same as usual, just no goal to blind everyones opinion
Vokes 6 Done all he could. but not much point in having a target man, if your not going to play anyone off him
Subs:
Lua Lua 6
CMS 7

Lord Gus of Poyet - 4 Said it a few weeks ago, and I'll say it again. Far to predictable. Fast becoming a one trick pony. LuaLua for Buckley. CMS for Barnes(WOW)/or Vokes. Never changes tactics or shape, just straight swaps. It was crying out for two wingers and CMS up top with Vokes when then subs were made. I've no worries anymore about Redknapp getting teh England job. No danger of us losing Gus for a few years yet. Much to learn.

Peter Brezovan 7 - Did nothing wrong. Nothing he could do with the goal and made a save or two.
Inigo Calderon Zapateria 8 - Brave header at the far post, ended up with some blood in his goatee but capped a decent performance.
Joe Mattock 8 - Untroubled and unflustered. Sign him up, as soon as possible.
Adam El-Abd 8 - Superb performance, some of his tackles and interceptions today were sheer quality.
Gordon Greer 7 - No problems with Emnes, never bothered at all really. Quality centre back.
Liam Bridcutt 6 - A couple of good moments but generally speaking, he was pretty poor today. I still think Navarro stifles him.
Alan Navarro 6 - Harsh, perhaps. He does his job and gets through his work, but it doesn't show him at his best. Bridcutt stifles him!
Vicente Rodriguez 8 - Quality at times, but a bit quiet. Some of his through balls were glorious.
William Buckley 7 - Didn't really run down the wing for me. When he got at Bennett, it was easy.
Ashley Barnes 7 - Was off his game. Got the ball in a good position in the centre circle first half, and picked out a pass to El-Abd. Confidence gone?
Sam Vokes 6 - We need someone to play off, but he needs to do a lot better against better opposition.

Subs
Kazenga LuaLua 6 - Didn't really get on the ball as much as we'd like.
Craig Mackail-Smith 6 - Disappointing to see him on the wing when he came on, but looked good and sharp.

What I don't like is how people assume that because Middlesbrough played well, we must not have played well. They were very good tactically and they made it very difficult for us to play, whilst being able to play their game aswell. That's why they were the best team to have played us so far, they were equally competant in attack and defence. West Ham parked the bus, Southampton were pathetic and Blackpool were blown away. Birmingham, we'll wait and see. Reading could be an absolute belter of a game, and the less said about the tactics of Cardiff and Hull the better. In general, all the better teams haven't found playing us at the Amex to be overly enjoyable.

I thought it was more a case of habit - pass it back and start again - rather than turn and see what is available, without looking up or knowing that a player was free. Maybe a breakdown in communication. He doesn't really have a defined position at the moment.

Is it just me who thinks our players are afraid of running with the ball? Aside from our wingers, and Vicente. How many times do Bridcutt, Navarro and Barnes pick up the ball with plenty of space, but just stop. I'm sure they're under instruction, but I would like to see them force the game a little bit more. We don't have to be uncontrolled in doing so, it would just change the focus of our play. A bit like Jonathan Williams did for the enemy on that night which shall not be mentioned.

Or Barry Robson, for example. How much damage did he do, picking the ball up and then running at us.

I think it's a case of League 1 players gaining confidence at this level. The players who do try to turn or look up and play a through ball are the ones who have played at a higher level.

Plus our fans slate people for not taking risks, yet give them a hard time if they don't play a simple pass.......

FRUIT OF THE BLOOM
Vokes was very very average today. Heavy touch and offside far too many times.

The reason Boro looked so good was because they were able to press us higher up the pitch than all the other sides I have seen this season, and that is because with Vokes up top there was no threat of us getting in behind them with his lack of pace.

He is simply too easy to mark.

When Lua Lua and CMS came on we looked far more dangerous.

I would still like to see CMS and Vokes get a few games together.
