Heading down to a quiet resort on the south coast next week but it will be the wife's birthday on one of the days and she fancies a day in Playa or Los Cristianos boutique style shopping and a fancy lunch, is there a nice part of either area that anyone can recommend, away from the "full English all day breakfast" places, is there a fancy Marina or similar?

cheers

Its not the best place in the world to be honest. There are some niceish parts, an old town with interesting shops a modern shopping centre with some more upmarket shops and restaurants (it was opposite a building that looked like a roman palace) but there was one fabulous spanish restaurant that we found between the two towns.
The marinas were nothing special.
Sorry.

Las christianos is v sleepy.
What I could recommend is Siam park, just 10 minutes by car from las Americas.
It's Europe's best water slide amusement park with an amazing Thailand theme.
A day or two very well spent if your into that sort of thing.

Tricky one, as most of the places you see will be the type that have unappetising pictures of all the menu items, menus in 5 languages and claim to be specialists in 'meat, seafood, pasta, vegetarian, Indian and Chinese' or similar.........

Siam Park is a fun day out but if I suggested that to my Mrs for a birthday treat I'd get a slap.

Have you tried tripadvisor ? Usually very reliable in my experience. Might give you some ideas at least

Did you know that the name, the Canary Islands, means The Isles of Dogs.

there is a bar on the main drag by the beach in Las Americas called The Travelers Inn something, I watched the Yeovil game there last week.

there are two bars next to each other that have SS and they had the commentary on too.

Study trip advisor comments and tips and choose a place to eat from this list,a drive to the Volcano is a must although 50 Euros for the two of you to go up in the cable car is a bit steep but if you've never done it I suppose it's not every day you can go up the 3rd largest Volcano in the world.

Make a day of it loads of good places away from main resorts

It was at least 10 years ago so expect things have changed but there was a great restaurant in Las Gellettas 15 minutes from Christianos. Take a look, small fishing village with a few seafood restaurants. I read about it on the plane out to Tenerife in the easy jet magazine. I can't remember the name but look up trip advisor for the town.

Meson Castellano by any chance?
Do you know I think it was that name really rings a bell, I remember it being quite dark with hams hanging up on the ceiling and loads of fish and stuff in the cold cabinets.
Just goes to show that there are not many good places if you knew it straight away from my description, it could have been anywhere.
Chicken Run, now you know the name you could do worse than take her there and its not far from the old town.
Dont be despondent, while Tenerife has not got a great reputation its actually not a bad island to visit just need to do some homework but Los Christianos and Americas really lets it down.
It could have been worse if you had booked up Puerto Rico on Gran Canaria now that really is a dump, the worse holiday I have ever had.
