I wouldn't want LCD if I was having a blood transfusion.

The genral agreement among the press is that LCD is the best, it is quieter, lasts longer and I beleive it weighs less. The perceived wisdom is that Plasma will gradually be phased out in favour of LCD.

FYI I get this type of information as a regular reader of T3, Stuff and Home Theatre magazine, and I also have an unhealthy interest in Home Cinema type stuff, much to Superwifes digust as it eats into her shoe budget.

Plasma screens generally have an average lifetime of 20,000 hours. Sounds alot but a fair number will fail way before this so...

Tip 1. Never buy a second hand Plasma screen unless you know its history - there is a good chance its faulty or has had thousands of hours use and so is likely to fail pretty soon.

Tip 2. If you buy a new one invest in a good extended warranty that will give you 3 years or more cover. Most new screens only come with a 12 month warranty.

I've got a 32" LCD screen in the lounge and the viewing picture is very crisp and clear. I felt that the plasma did not have the same picture quaility and I was dubious about the lifetime (although 20,000 hours is a lot).

LCD are considerably more expensive than plasma and I have not seen any in the 42" region.

I take it this LCD business is not the same Liquid Crystal Display you used to get on your Game & Watch consoles? Cos they were crap. Though, saying that, they gave hours of fun. Ah, Donkey Kong 2 on the flip-up screen. Marvellous scenes

They are 'the same' in that they are Liquid Crystal Displays. But the Game and Watch displays used ancient technology, stuff so old its not got an acronym even

The TV's use TFT - Thin Film Transistor - LCD panels, the same as a computer flat screen or a modern, good quality laptop.

Some laptops use Super Twist Nematic or Dual Super Twist Nematic screens though - cheap crap in these days.
