Plus you get the sides where players take it in turns to get a ‘head injury’ on 15 mins, 30 mins, 60 mins and 75 mins so the rest of the team cam amble across to the touchline to get a drink as their sports scientist has established these are the optimal intervals for them to rehydrate in a match.

Not as embarrassing as the Wolves players collapsing with feigned head injuries last season. Every time we attacked down they went. The ref, being the complete mug that he was, fell for it every time. He stopped play, we lost the initiative and the Wolves player recovered like Lazarus. I’m still fuming. Still, revenge was sweet when we whipped them 3-0 away and eventually overtook them in the League.

Totally agree. I just don't want our players doing it.

As others have said, stricter refereeing on this and various other bits of cheating would go a long way to solving the problem.

Proposed new rule: if a team wastes time, the decision goes the other way. So if they waste time at a throw in, the other side gets the throw. If they waste time at a goal kick, it becomes a corner. And so on. No need to book anyone for timewasting because the loss of possession would hit harder than any booking.

And what are the chances of refs suddenly becoming at least adequate?

If someone claims a head injury it should be an automatic assessment by the physio and then off the pitch.

As a clever person posted a while back the solution to time wasting is to time the game to minutes of ball in play (with the clock stopped during faffing as it is in some American sports). My understanding is that 60 minutes action would give us, on average, a 90 minute bums on seats experience. Clubs like Bumley (RIP) and their 22/23 equivalents would be forced to engage for 95+ minutes, whereas a Citeh game would be over by 85 minutes uisng this rubric. I like it!

Whilst it would eliminate timewasting for the sake of shortening the game, it would do nothing for time-wasting to prevent the opponents momentum.
I think this is the more crucial aspect to timewasting, particularly in the Premier League. It allows the defending team to re-organise, when under pressure.

The advantage of the current situation is that the ref has the option to give yellow cards for persistent time wasting, which they may be less likely to do under a 60 minute rule.

Any rule change should seek to punish the timewasting team.
There will still be an advantage to be had under the 60 minute rule.

Very good points.

Some think that 60min of effective game time is better (and longer) than the current average of 55min.

And how do you guarantee an effective 60mins and if you can, why can't that be applied to 90 mins? We have bigger squads and more subs so clubs/players should be able to manage. The only thing letting this not happen is ineffective referees.

The same way you can guarantee it in most other team sports? Stopping the clock at throw-ins, injuries, corners, goal kicks, free kicks, drink breaks etc.

Sure, could be applied to 90 mins but that would probably make the average game somewhere around 3 hours long and obviously adding like 40% game time compared to now would make it all very different from how it has been in the past, while 60 min would probably be very similar to the average effective game time historically speaking.

I wax lyrical when multiball is used.

At the Theatre Of Trees, I was walking on the running track when the opposition were attacking. A tackle came in and the ball headed my way. However new ball was soon in use and the opposition raced towards our goal. I picked up the ball near my way and booted towards our goal, it landing on the edge of the penalty area.

Ref stopped the game instantly. Much to the consternation of the opposition. The ref decided to remove all other balls. A steward came towards me and started to get shirty. All I did was return the ball ffs. Clipboard looked round and gave me the thumbs up. I proceeded to go for leak.

My main concern with this is whether it will deny us the pleasure of seeing Chelsea fans boot the ball into each other's faces.

One of the things i find most annoying is the constant standing by the ball when a free kick is awarded . Mick mcarthy's Ipswich were particularly adept at this "skill" . I remember one game where we played them and one of their defenders was standing over the ball when we had a free kick on the halfway line only to be replaced quickly by one of their forwards who literally sprinted 30 yards to take his place so the defender could go back into his position !
This behaviour could be quickly halted imo if the refs would just get their yellow card out and enforce the rules .
.

I thought this died a death when the free "kicker" cottoned on to the fact that if he tapped the ball onto the blockers feet the ref would issue a yellow card for not retreating the 10 yards.

OMG!! So when do the 80th minute leavers leave? There will be multiple synchronisation of watches all around the Amex with multiple tut-tutting. Cue the Clash hit “Should I Stay Or Should I Go”. :lolol:

I’m against it as I think it gives the defending team a disadvantage, which is OK when it’s not us, but can catch you out if the replacement ball gets into play too quickly. It also gives players time to get their breath back.

Agreed, much bigger overall problem than diving, it's something that's needed addressing for years.

The actual time the ball is in play in most games is embarrassing - 55 minutes the average in the PL last season.

American Football - the average in ball play time is 11mins - for an event that takes over 3hours!

This feigning head injuries could be stopped in a heartbeat if every player who claimed a head injury (whether real or imagined) was required to leave the pitch for a HIA and was only allowed to return if an INDEPENDENT doctor sanctioned it. A sub allowed whilst the HIA takes place but the disruption the HIA could cause would be a disincentive.

Once you eliminate the cheats who are just pretending to have a head injury, only players who have actually suffered a head injury would have to go off for a HIA. And that's no bad thing surely?

I shall leave at exactly 56 minutes on the clock.

Remember, there will be no 'added time'. The clock is stopped each time the ball goes out of play and when there are injuries and substitutions. Knowing exactly when to leave couldn't be simpler.

There is an excellent post on another thread that shows that during a '90 minute game' currently the ball is in play from between 55 minutes (a Bumley game) and 65 (a Citeh game). So set the duration of play at 60 minutes and you would be in the stadium for approximately the same amount of time you are now, give or take 5 minutes. And you will know exactly how much time there was left to play.I ****ing love this, myself.

The only thing this won't stop, as pointed out by Uh_huh_him, is teams slowing the game down and disrupting play to interfere with the opposition's rhythm. I am not sure how much of this, by the likes of Bumley isn't simply time wasting, though, and my guess is that it will diminish if not disappear completely with 60 minutes time in play.
