7th. place? Conference League? Fine by me!

I understand that for financial reasons the club would like the CL, but for me the Conference would be a great (potentially winnable) adventure - and a good platform to build on for yet higher European adventures in the future. And those hardy and highly commendable souls who follow the Albion wherever would still have a few exciting trips to new and exciting places!
Yes, my thoughts entirely. it really won't be too bad, as we would have a great chance of winning it. The final is in Germany by the way. The only thing might be that with quite a few minor teams, by European competition standards, the matches might not mean a full Amex all the time. Seems far-fetched at present, I know, but if we keep winning, and it is on TV, plus the usual night-time transport problems, then the excitement of European adventures may wane slightly, certainly in the preliminary round. I am NOT being over-confident, just speculating as to what might happen.

I've thought for a while that 62points will more than likely be enough to get European football next season.

What this thread has done is make me do the basic research to seeif there was any evidence to back that feeling up.

So here it is:

Over the past ten seasons, 6th place has finished on the following points(from last season descending to 2014/15):

63, 62, 58, 63, 59, 66, 63, 69, 63, 62

7th place has finished with the following points totals:

60, 61, 56, 62, 59, 57, 54, 61, 62, 60

8th place has finished with the following points:

60, 60, 52, 61, 56, 54, 49, 46, 60, 56

62 points would therefore get us 6th place in 4 of the last 10 seasons(and it did in fact do just that in 2023). It would get us into 7th place in every one of the last 10 seasons and would obviously do the same for 8h place.

The only way 7th wouldn't get us in Europe would be if Newcastle both win the league cup and finish 8th or lower AND if someone like Fulham, Bournemouth, Villa, Palace or Preston win the f.a cup and finish 8th or lower.

To get to 62 points villa will need to win 5 draw 2 of their remaining games, Bournemouth will need to win 6(or 5 wins 3 draws) and Fulham will need to win 6 draw 2. We'll need to win 5 or win 4 draw 3.

Based off of all that I'm going to stick with my prediction that 62 points will give us a very good chance of playing in Europe next season.

Got us finishing 8th but all comes down to the final day. United get a result at home to Villa and we beat spurs and we finish 7th.

So 4 wins, 3 draws, 2 losses from the final 9. Its possible.

It really is such a competitive league this season, it's impossible to predict how it's going to end, (apart from top 2 and bottom 3)

Lots of confidence about Chelsea’s chances on this thread.

I have two points of opposition to their perceived strength.

1. In two games at the Amex, they were shit and offered little.

2. In April, they have to face 6 matches in 14 days. The bread in that particular sandwich is made up of derby/rivalry matches away.

Looks like 5 games in 15 days to me, but point still stands.

The stupid timing of the FA Cup Final on the penultimate weekend could have a big effect. Imagine losing that (thereby missing out on a Europa League spot), then having to play Liverpool and Spurs in the following 7 days to clinch a European place.

Best to imagine winning it I suppose…

Interesting ....So really need us , man city or forest to win fa cup so that means 8 teams in Europe next season.

If Newcastle fook up and finish out of top 7 this is bad news. Even worse news if team from outside top 7 wins fa cup

Interesting ....So really need us , man city or forest to win fa cup or otherwise, unless Newcastle fook up. 7th will be conference league. 8th bugger all.

It doesn't matter if Newcastle muck it up or not, they've already guaranteed at least the conference league place.

Slightly different way of reading those stats:

7th place only reached 62 points in 2 out of the last 10 seasons. So actually, despite what 6th *actually* scored, anything 62 or higher was good enough in 8/10 (let's ignore the possibility that 6th place losing points would result in 7th gaining for a moment, because that's too complicated). Target 63 and that rises to 10/10. So that's what we should aim for: +3 (or better) vs the Europe Tracker at the end of the season and we should be 6th (or better).
