This is the full explanation:

The arc at the top of the penalty area is not a full half circle. It is scribed out with the penalty mark as its center, and it's there to provide a reference mark that allows players and the officials to know where "10 yards from the ball" is with reference to the penalty mark. Upon a penalty kick, players will take up positions about the top of the penalty box, but outside the arc. The top center of the penalty box is actually a bit closer to the penalty mark than 10 yards. Hence the need for the line.
The Laws of the Game require players to be ten yards from the penalty mark (and outside of the penalty box) at the time a penalty kick is taken. Players must remain outside those areas until the ball is touched to (re)initiate play.

The line that's equadistant from the penalty spot to stop defenders encroaching when penalty is being taken - i.e. you've got to be behind it. I hope I'm right after all that!

You should always repair your pitch marks. It's also very bad form to walk across your opponents putting line.

It is the only area of the pitch in which the referee is allowed to take a shot.







But that was because I was forced to be a referee and it just sat up kindly.

Why don't they have a bigger D by the corner flag, whenever a player takes a corner now it's always outside the D
I love it when you watch a game on tv and fans go nuts when the ball is a few inches outside the D, it's hardly gaining much advantage but if we had a bigger D it would stop some fans getting high blood pressure
