Put it into perspective old chap! A celebratory proclamation of a once in a lifetime promotion is totally different to some knob running onto to the pitch to either antagonise opposition fans or lump an opposing player or being a complete ‘look at me tw*t’. Any of those committed and he deserves everything that comes to him.

But that's exactly what the poster you quoted is pointing out - under these new rules, even the "once in a lifetime promotion" pitch invaders risk getting banned.

I personally think this situation has been influenced by a) those 'look at me tw*t' idiots who assaulted players and b) media hype. The former occassioned the latter, to a point where the media have made us believe that these pitch invasions are becoming an increasing occurrence. Have they really increased? Ever since I've been going to football (1997) there have been pitch invasions throughout all the leagues (less so in the Prem) for promotion, relegation survival, even by those who were relegated and for playoff semi-final winners. Where has the increase been? I really don't think there has.

What there has potentially been an increase in is offences committed during pitch invasions, which this new law seems to tackle. Is it enforceable if a couple of thousand fans invade the pitch? It's yet to be seen. If it isn't, then it's no different to the pitch invader of five years ago who would have been banned for running on the pitch solo. That's always been the pitch invasion gamble - if no one joins in you get banned, but if 2000 join you you're fine. If it is enforceable, then fair enough, but yet again it's the tiny minority of idiots spoiling the joy for the majority. Would the Wigan promotion scenes have been nearly as special if there hadn't been an invasion, causing the players to celebrate in the boxes? I think not.

Then you should open your eyes a bit more. At Wolves, fans at the very back of the stand were lobbing them into Brighton fans in front of them because they couldn't reach the pitch. Utter twunts.

Be warned. 4 Nottingham Forest fans at the FA Youth Cup at the end of last season let of smoke bombs. It took about 10 mins to identify their seat number, escort them from the ground and into the hands of the police waiting outside. Police prosecuted (largely at the request of the club) and 3 out of the 4 received long football banning orders. They weren't hooligans, they were an otherwise law abiding family group.

It's not worth the risk.

Surely also impossible to identify if it's thousands of fans. Easy enough if it's one or two and I suppose the stricter penalties if enforced will act as a deterrent

Yes it is impossible to identify everyone on the pitch but the more identified and banned, the better the deterrent next time.

A very small minority have them. There's not that many let off at games which could even suggests it's just one or two people that have them.

For what it's worth, I agree with the post that says it's behaviour ON the pitch, not the act of BEING on the pitch, that is the issue here. And whilst they can't legislate for this, I hope in effect it's only enforced for small incursions rather than promotion/relegation celebrations.

I'm sure TB was happy with that. It would have been a different matter if people had gone on the pitch and then intimidated opposition players/staff which is what happened at the end of last season.

There has been an increase in idiots getting onto the pitch and players being attacked by 'fans'. The Amex has history of arrests and bans for those who encroach onto the pitch during celebration so nothing new for us. Hopefully less time spent waiting for the debacle to be dealt with

Dangerous precedent - who knows where the loyalties lie for the herbert chucking pyros onto the pitch ? That could easily be open to manipulation, especially at the sharp end of the season.

Its a shame, but the actions of the coked-up goons at the tail end of last season have basically ruined what was previously a harmless spontaneous expression of celebration for thousands of fans. The authorities are right to clamp down on it, its jut gotten too bloody dangerous for players and officials now when the mob descends onto the pitch.

ANY dilbert who takes it upon himself to invade the pitch during a match deserves everything he gets. Ideally a good kicking, for starters.
