But when you order a drink or a meal which is the context to which I referred, you don't say that in correct grammatical use.
You say can I have.
You don't say can I receive or be given a pint or a burger. ( Unless you watch too much US TV. In which case you will say, incorrectly, can I get.)

Oh dear.

Cans are what beans come in. It’s may I have.

No, no, I should hope not. It was a simply the answer to your question about what I wanted to order from the actual menu you gave us. Had you sucked wind through your teeth and said 'tricky' we'd have been off. Absolutely without any ****ing problem whatsoever. Through the door, whoosh, gone.

"Certainly sir" would have sufficed. With that, there would not even been any need to add "and may I suck your balls" :shrug:

It really isn't. More formal, yes. Not quite the same thing. If a friend asked me: 'May I ..?' I might think he/she was taking the pi$$.

Must be how you were brought up then.
