Summer of 76 was when I left school (amongst loads of others it appears)

Seeing the list of pubs and bars brings back memories. I reckon over the next few years I used

The Hungry Years (for a couple of years 76-78 until Peppa banned me just before my 18th Birthday )
Fortune of War
Bosun (a few times, mainly so we could say 'go there all the time')
Shades/Pav Tav
Swifts
Fagans
Smugglers
William Tell
The Quadrant
The Suite

And a few others not yet mentioned

Sherrys
The Volunteer (corner of New road)
Heneky's
Windsor Tavern
The Basement (under the art college)
The Alhambra (and Inn place underneath)
The Feathers
Bonsoir
The Bird's nest

I'm beginning to wonder whether I had a drink problem back then as the memories are a little hazy ???

Now I feel really old Steve, I can remember the late 60's when it was originally a Disco called The Orange Timepiece!

Wow that took me back.
I always thought Rock Night at the Suite was a Thursday?
Saw so many up and coming bands.
Remember seeing Scorpions there - lead guitarist dressed as a Sioux Chief lol.
They left the stage leaving their guitars on the floor giving loud feedback until the roadies unplugged them.

CLUB AND PUB RATINGS

Top Rank Suite 8 - Great for meeting ladies, 'grab a granny night', Friday and 'Saturday night was alright for fighting'
Sherry's 6 - Great dance floor, light show, and 'chicken in a basket' from a serving hatch that stunk the place out
Jenkinson's 7 - I liked the place, good cabaret, always dark in there
Basement 7 - Sweaty and plenty of students
Bentleys 6 - Felt a bit out of place, am I right in thinking you had to wear a tie to get in?
Hungry Years 10 - Absolutely loved the place, as Joe Walsh would say 'It's hard to leave when you can't find the door'
Pav Tavern 9 - Excellent beer and bars, wine bar for the ladies, why oh why did they knock all the walls out !!
Windsor Tavern 8 - Another gem, I used to go there when it was two bars, they had a budgie in the public bar
Queen Anne 6 - Could only get lager, at 33p a pint - it was the most expensive at the time
Deryck Carver 7 - Pompey Royal and another punch up!
Nobles Bar 8 - Was the Merrydown wine bar, cider was my downfall
Albion Inn 9 - Fantastic beer, Mick the barman - you were a legend

The King and Queen as a precursor and meeting place before heading to the Years in the 70s.

When they served actual Amber Nectar imported from Australia!

(although I was more a cherry wine sort of cove at the time. Ahem)

I used to go there most Sunday lunchtimes as Dad used to playt in a jazz band there and it was just the upstairs single unit.

?

You must have left school at 16 (if you were 18 when banned from the Years in 78). I was 18 when I left school in 76. Beefy Botham working wonders during the long hot summer as I painted council houses in Lancing while waiting to see if I could pick up a uni place through clearing (yes, I know ).

Amazing how many NSc posters are now between 61 and 65. Effing #geriatrics.net :lolol:

I thought it was called the Revolution.
Went down the stairs and under Jenkinsons

Cheers simmo - that was the name my aging brain couldn't recall - I'm 2-3 years younger than you.

Rev - used to get free entry vouchers from Brighton Technical College and get utterly bladdered on Pernod and black and still have change from a tenner for a great night out that would usually conclude with a leery smooch for the "slow ones" which were always the last 3 before lights-on and shown the exit at 2am.

As WATFORD zero says, hazy memories as a lot of lager has passed under the bridge since then ....

I'd forgotten about those spiky pole things on the seafront. I remember seeing the magnetic window cleaners and thinking "This is the future". In fact, I still think about those magnetic window cleaners when I pay a bloke £20 to clean my windows - those things will pay for themselves in no time at all...

Nice to see so many replies to this thread, great to read the memories of going drinking in Brighton.
I get the feeling I was the only one to not go to the Hungry Years. :D
