Phone calls from companies

In the last few weeks I must have received about 8 calls from companies offering their services. I don't know where the hell these people get my number from because I am careful, but I am getting a bit annoyed with it now. I know they are only their jobs, but I want some payback so I was thinking....

Is it possible to get a number so that when they ring me its costs them 45p a minute to talk to me, like they do to us?

It might stop them trying to call as their systems probably filter out these numbers, but if they do get through I would be more than happy to keep them on the line :laugh:

My fave.

Rather than going on the defensive act like you're really pleased that they have called "cos you have been thinking about getting a new mobile phone"

Then tell them you are just nipping off to get a pen and paper, leave them waiting and don't go back.

Cruel but funny - always fun to see how long they are prepared to wait for a sale!

You must have given your number out to a company which then sells on your details which is why you are getting all these calls. Tell them to remove your number from their calling list because if they call again you will send them a bill for being inconvenienced.

I keep getting automated calls from companies who want to help me ease my debts - which as we are ex-directory and don't have any debt is f***ing annoying. As it would cost me money to call them back to have a real person to tell to f*** off there isn't a lot I can do unfortunately

...pretend to be stark staring bonkers...it is surprising how quickly those types of calls will dry up!

Alternatively, tell them that you are going to put them on hold and place the handset next to the radio.

Join the Telephone Preference Service. This should reduce the amount of calls you get. Just type it into google. It was set up to reduce nuisance calls

If its a human on the line, get a referees whistle and give it a good blast in your mouthpiece.

Job done.

This. It takes a couple of weeks to fully kick in but it does work. Also if someone then phones you up just mention that you have registered with TPS so could they please repeat their name and company. In my limited experience they hang up straight away.

Brighton. NOT KEMPTOWN!
I say, "I'll put you on hold just for a second or to. Don't go away".
I then put on a CD, put the phone receiver next to the speaker, and then carry on doing what I was doing before I was rudely interupted.
They are never there when the music has finished.

It's more fun than the TPS, although that's the sensible solution.

There's also a Postal Preference Service too, which virtually eliminates all junk mail.
In fact, I can't remember the last time I had junk mail.

Say "how did you get this number? Only it's a government phone and MI5 track all the calls". Phone goes down pretty sharpish in my experience.
Or as has been suggested above ask them to hold on then ignore them
