I believe it is a regulatory requirement to have data through animal testing, to get approval for use, in most countries of the world. Animal testing of at least 2 of the Covid Vaccines was carried out for this purpose only, human trials were conducted concurrently.

You are correct there are indeed regulatory requirements to have animal testing, but that isn't the same thing as requiring animal testing to develop drugs. 95 percent of all drugs that are shown to be safe and effective in animal tests fail in human trials because they don’t work or are dangerous.

A survey of 4,451 experimental cancer drugs developed between 2003 and 2011 found that more than 93 percent failed after entering the first phase of human clinical trials, even though all had been tested successfully on animals.

Meanwhile many drugs that are widely used by people have failed animal trials. Penicillin kills guinea pigs. Aspirin kills cats and causes birth defects in rats, mice, guinea pigs, dogs, and monkeys. And morphine, a depressant in humans, stimulates goats, cats, and horses.

Despite this overwhelming failure rate of developing drugs for humans by testing them in non-humans, billions of dollars are spent on it, including 40 percent of all research funding from the US National Institutes of Health.

Its time for a change of thinking..

"The most significant trend in modern research is the recognition that animals rarely serve as good models for the human body. Human clinical and epidemiological studies, human tissue- and cell-based research methods, cadavers, sophisticated high-fidelity human-patient simulators, and computational models have the potential to be more reliable, more precise, less expensive, and more humane alternatives to experiments on animals. Advanced microchips that use real human cells and tissues to construct fully functioning postage stamp–size organs allow researchers to study diseases and also develop and test new drugs to treat them. Progressive scientists have used human brain cells to develop a model “microbrain,” which can be used to study tumors, as well as artificial skin and bone marrow. We can now test skin irritation using reconstructed human tissues (e.g., MatTek’s EpiDermTM), produce and test vaccines using human tissues, and perform pregnancy tests using blood samples instead of killing rabbits."

One of the big differences with animal testing is that what works on them will not necessarily work on humans so has no benefit to us. The other disturbing evidence is so many experiments on animals are experiments that have been done in the past that the researchers already know what will happen, so why do these?

They do this because we as a race do not give a **** about animals. Most on here would probably describe themselves as an 'animal lover', which is a bit rich given they probably eat animals every day.

Yep. You can’t claim to “love animals” and eat them too. Nor can you claim to love animals and turn a blind eye to their suffering in regards to testing. Barbaric practice.

cute cartoon, though we seem to agree on the point i was making.

all rather irrelevant since the petition and the thread title are different.

there's another side to the (general, original subject) of banning all animal testing, this lead to more human trials with substandard programmes in places where ethics are not monitored so well. doesnt get same attention for some reason.

I imagine a wide birth is par for the course when it comes to whales.

When I worked for the Pharmaceutical Industry the animals under test were better cared for, and had more space than laboratory technicians. Medications need to be tested to avoid killing humans.

Animal testing for vanity products for the beauty industry should be the first target

Were the technicians tested on? If not, you may need to rethink your definition of “better cared for”.

I posted this in the dark side of horse racing thread but thought I'd give it it's own thread in the hope of reaching more people.

Please watch the video in the linked tweet from Peter Egan and sign the petition. The video is of course distressing but interestingly it shows that laboratory testing on animals has little to no benefit to Humans. Hopefully you will be shocked enough to sign.

Petition:

https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/591775

PS. This petition is to include laboratory animals in the Animal Welfare Act which they currently are not, not end testing on animals altogether.

Absolute bollocks.

Anyone prepared to take a drug that has not been tested for mechanism of action, effects in a disease model, and for adverse effects, either in animals or prisoners or the mentally ill, is a fool.

Of the three, the least unpalatable is the first. In Americal the second group (and allegedly the third) were the go to test populations in the 1950s.

And of course if none of this is acceptable, if your kid gets sick, let them die. Everything that may make them well was necessarily tested on animals. Mustn't be a hypocrite, now.

None of this means that animal research should be done whilly nilly however. The lengths I have to go to justify everything I do in my lab are breathaking. The laws are far more stringent than the laws in child protection.

The anti vivs have a habit of pulling out old footage taken years before, back in the era when slapping the kids and the missus was the norm. They also come out with the crap about numbers of animals and numbers of new drugs. Yes it is bloody hard to invent new drugs. Most fail due to lack of effectiveness or safety - as determined in animals. And that is despite the molecule being designed for selectivity. It is a very difficult business.

The one thing I would advocate is bettertraining in design and analysis. Research has too many perverse incentives now - publications in journals with high 'impact factors' is 1000 times as important as making a translatable discovery. All the time people bring shame on themselves by calling for an end to drug research they slow any moves to making drug research better.

The laws on animal housing, room temperature, humidity, feed and handling and even means of death are not matched by laws for humans where children and adults living in disgusting conditions and circumstances is apparently quite acceptable (and legal).
