Petition: Hold public inquiry into West Ham & LLDC deal for rental of Olympic Stadium

West Ham has only contributed £15m towards the £272m conversion costs of the Olympic Stadium, with the taxpayer footing the rest of the bill. Considering the cost to the taxpayer, and the effect of this taxpayer subsidy on competition between clubs, a full public inquiry into the deal is needed.

On top of the minimal conversion contribution, West Ham has been allowed to keep the sale proceeds of their current stadium, valued at £71m. Rental is £2.5m a year, halving should WHU be relegated. Taxpayers will cover the costs of stadium utilities, security, pitch maintenance, goalposts and corner flags - estimated to be worth £1.4m - £2.5m a year. Public money should be used responsibly, and in a way which does not distort the competitiveness of independent sports bodies and businesses.

Over 10,000 signatures have been achieved today alone but it is really important that all football clubs join together to ensure there is an inquiry into this. This level of help for one club alone, at the expense of the tax payer, makes a mockery of fair play and opportunity for all.

Done. Wrong on all levels.

Done. Seems to me the taxpayer will end up paying for the new White Hart Lane and Stamford Bridge if this deal goes through. It's about time Premier League clubs returned to the real world but I can't see that happening any time soon.

I don't want to dislike West Ham but.......although we have had our disagreements with the O's over the years they really do not deserve this. Todays' Orient fans will never change allegance, but their children and grandchildren will with a probable Prem club in their patch.

Also, the 'plastic tag' somehow does not seem to apply to West Ham in the way it does Manure, Bindippers and Arsenal fans. Somehow they as seen as salt of the earth type of geezers, even the ones on the train up from Sussex every other week, time they realised that they are just another set of occasional glory hunters.

I must be the only one who thinks this is a bad deal for West Ham in the long term.

They become tenants rather than owning their own stadium, and pocket just 70 million for their current ground, which is less than 1 years PL TV money.

And is the Olympic stadium actually well designed for football? The seats behind the goals must be pretty grim behind the running track.

It'll end in tears.

What sort of "public inquiry" are the petitioners hoping for? What has happened is clearly a political decision. Is it possible to overturn a political decision by means of a public inquiry?

As I understand it, there are queries as to whether this level of subsidy breaches European competition law. Perhaps public enquiry is the wrong phrase but it does merit some sort of investigation.

It'll end in tiers.

Fixed it for you

Not sure West Ham fans can be described as glory hunters given the dross they have to watch week in week out.
