I had the pleasure of spending a long (golfing) weekend with him in Portugal, some 20 years ago. Boy, he knew how to put his drink away and absolutely detested Sky, so we had plenty in common!

When told that when commentating that he should refer to metres rather than feet and inches, he refused and instead called distances on the greens by the number of steps away from the hole.

He often stayed at the Brickwall Hotel in Sedlescombe and would come over to my pub with his wife for a meal. Spent many an afternoon with them, a truly lovely couple. His wife was very funny, she was a JP and would tell some great stories.
