What’s happened to his defensive game? 15 months go possibly one of the beat LB’s on the planet, I remember a R5 Monday or Friday evening programme rating him the best LB in the PL at that moment. Now … awful positional sense, nothing bits of play down his side become a clean break for his opponent as he comes unstuck in a tussle, on repeat. Thank gawd for Dunk.

Whilst upfield he’s still a bit of a force.
Indeed. His reduced pace (sadly) means he should be coached to never dive in for the challenge during an oppo breakaway on the halfway line... and yet he still does it 😬

Like saying to he earth is flat because others say it's round?
That kind of balance
I’d argue the opposite, but good effort.

As I said in my other posts, I didn’t think Veltman was awful last night, he just made a few mistakes that we were lucky they didn’t capitalise on. That’s not that shocking of a statement.

And when his sole job is to defend because he’s absolutely awful going forward, you have to be willing to pull him up on those mistakes so he’s held to the same standards as our other defenders who have more complex tactical jobs to do.

It’s not that difficult to work out really.

Estupinian dived in stupidly, high up, twice in the first half, once for the disallowed goal and again later. If he does that against Villa and particularly Arsenal, we’ll get absolutely murdered.

Keep your shape or win the challenge. Defending is simple done correctly.

Yes, which is exactly why Veltman looked fairly imperious… he does the basics of defending so well.

He saved us at least twice in the first half…

If Veltman made some mistakes yesterday, they were neither catastrophic or obvious… and this constant bashing of his forward play is odd as he’s never really had that side to his game and yet Fabian clearly rates him as probably our key defender….

If you take Pervis by comparison last night, he offered nothing but mistakes going forward, left his flank exposed, couldn’t or wouldn’t track back, nearly scored an OG, tackled his own player in the box, could barely control the ball, looked laboured, top heavy, out of breath - he was blowing out of his arse after 60 mins… not sure why either as he wasn’t running or sprinting that often ?!? He was woeful.

There is no balance to be had here by trying to claim Velters was as bad because he didn’t voluntarily expose his flank all God Dam night for zero reward… if Velts had been as bad we probably lose… again.

Pervis is all at sea and off the pace… Villa will murder him.

So many of the Estupinan errors seem avoidable. Scuffles at the half-way line by the touchline with literally any opponent no matter the struggling status of the club, Estupinan makes himself wrong side, then their player is away in on goal.
I think this is a big reason why Dunk has struggled this season as he is having to cover him all the time and getting pulled out of position himself

Thomas Frank tried to exploit first half. Three? straight down the middle long balls to a lone player breaking in the huge gap between JPVH and Dunk, it almost worked.

Christ man, lay off Velts … he was superb defensively last night… not really worried about what he didn’t offer offensively, as he defended superbly.

Perv was poor at both ends of the pitch, and very poor defensively… he’s lost a yard of pace since his injury, blindly obvious and shouldn’t be being asked to push up all the time… he looks immobile, really sad to see.
It’s this imbalanced view and double standard that most of our fan base really struggle with 🤷‍♂️

There is no agenda, no double standard… I’m saying it as I saw it: Pervis had a poor game and got very lucky he didn’t cost us. Veltman was assured and saved us on at least two occasions in the first half alone.

The biggest concern is the inbalance in our tactics, which isn’t helping a yard off Pervis at all.

Estupinan is nowhere near the player he was b4 his injury and is now the biggest liability in the defence with his rash challenges leaving the right flank wide open
If you believed this board none of our players are ever the same after an injury, it’s absolute bollocks. We must be the only side in the league that once a player gets injured we may as well kick them out the door.

Sure, but its also a lot easier being Joel Veltman.

On average positions, Pervis is 20-30 meters further up the pitch because he is expected to participate in our attacks. Meanwhile everyone is quite content that Veltman spends 90% of his games primarly defending. That, along with playing with the defensively-not-so-good Mitoma, makes his job more difficult than Veltmans.

And sure it will result in us conceding more on that side but we also (I think, haven't checked this season) produce more on the left side.

Mitoma's defending is excellent.
Who's in front of Veltman protecting him better?
Minteh? Adingra?..

I mean... yes and no. Is he better than a lot of winger-wingers at defending? I'd say yes. But, a bit like Minteh, he would really need to defend more like LM than a LW given that we usually only play one DMC. He "needs" to be part of defensive transitions earlier rather than coming back when we regroup, or Pervis can easily get overrun. With two CBs and one DMC, Dunk really doesn't want to go out wide and help him either.

But like I also said: Veltman attacks less and thats the main reason he's often better defensively positioned. After all he was likely signed to play RCB in a three-man back line and its kind of what he does in his RB role as well, though obviously sometimes following to add support/options to his winger.
