We often hear about Albions' "succession planning", which allegedly goes from the board room, managerial, coaching, playing and probably to the person who brings Graham his tea/coffee . We saw this in action with the appointment of Potter a few years ago, but more recently with the loss of White and Bissouma with replacements already in place, and had been for sometime so they were ready to go with barely a noticeable difference.
This signing is however on a different level. Cucurella was a new signing, arguably one of the best ever players to wear the shirt, and was expected to be in place for a considerable time. To have a player that we have obviously monitored for years, of arguably a higher proven standard (Europa League winner, CL Semi finalist from last season , nigh on 100 first class games, not only on our radar, but signed, sealed and delivered within a couple of weeks is just outstanding by any measure. In his interview he states that one of the reasons he signed was our interest in him over a period of time. Other players have said the same
To have signed him for what is (compared to the fee received for Cucu ) peanuts resulting in a massive profit while possibly not weakening the team is incredible.
Our recruitment set up must be the envy of the entire league, some of whom must be thinking lets just bin our recruitment, wait till Brighton move for a player and just outbid them!
There are more and more reports saying what an amazing set up Brighton have, we are mentioned as a club other clubs aspire to be like.
Its hard to believe the progress the club has made, and continues to make.
Looking at the total mess Man Utd are in, with all their millions, super star players, and to compare that with Brighton just shows how very very lucky we are

I think he's much more suited to the LWB/LB role than a LCB role. But we are talking about the coaching of Graham Potter here and lets face it none of ever expected to see Cucurella playing LCB at any point. I do think in this case though Pervis is the LWB replacement and Colwill is the LCB backup to Webster currently.
It's given a huge amount of competition in the squad though. March has been playing RWB and Trossard LWB, maybe we will see Trossard move more central into an attacking midfielder role when Lallana needs a rest to make way for Pervis as the LWB.

In terms of who we’d drop to accommodate him, I don’t think it’s as straight forward as a simple replacement.
At Old Trafford we played quite narrow first half to great effect. Second half United started attacking us on the wings. If we’d have had Pervis on the bench he could have come on and given us greater strength on the left flank.
I expect he’ll start some games and come off the bench on others. I see him as a LB for when we want to play four at the back.

Colwill is the new LCB option, and Estupinan is the LB option - he doesn’t really have other choices in the squad there - given that Trossard is better off as a wing back or winger I guess and Potter has mostly avoided playing him in a 4.
I guess Potter could try him at LCB and LWB but he has other options there.

So he signs for Villarreal for 15 million, he reaches a Europa League final a champions league semi final and is named in Copa America team of the tournament and then we buy him for 13 million.

It'll be Lallana (most likely) or Gross. Trossard will move into one of those more attacking midfield places and Pervis will go to LWB.
Saying that, I don't think we will see Pervis start on Sunday however. Team will be unchanged.
As mentioned a few times already, various sources identified Pervis as the most similar player to Cucu last season.

Indeed. I think it's a product of how we recruit, the whole process of having a list of several players we're interested in and working that list concurrently until one of the players on the list commits. That means we'll always have a pool of players who we've been talking to previously who we can restart talks with when needed. If I was a betting man, I'd suggest that we probably had talks for Pervis while we were working on the Cucurella deal, and there'll be others who were on that list as well. It means we're always in a good place to move quickly should a player we're interested in suddenly become available for a fee that represents good value.
Our recruitment team are so good at keeping their work off the rumour mill normally that it's not until a deal gets advanced that we start to hear about it. At which point we also discover that it's actually a deal we've been after for a lot longer than anyone knew.
The ball retention stats are really interesting.
Looking at Cucu, for the life of me, I could not remember him giving the ball away. But then I realised the obvious. If you are crossing the ball (whatever player) into the box, your possession stats will be warped compared to players who aren’t trying to do an ambitious assist regularly.
Or option C (which has already been mentioned several times on this thread): Villareal needed to sell urgently to meet financial regs so they could register players they'd already bought. We've swooped and got a really good deal out of it.
