Can someone explain to me why Percy Tau is allowed to work in some areas of the EU - and now looks set for a move to either the Belgian or French top flights, yet we cannot get him a work permit?

Because we aren't in Schengen and have our own rules

Basically this. The country can set its own rules on such things as work permits for non-Europeans. If he had a passport from a European country it would be a different matter. Belgium chooses to have a laxer threshold for work permits for non-Europeans with regard to professional footballers it seems.

It's ironic, given non-EU inward migration to the UK is the highest its been for 14 years. No problems replacing a French doctor with a South African doctor, but try replacing a French winger with a South African winger and you can forget it.

If anyone was being cynical would they say, Brighton have funds available being a PL team so buy a non EU player, than aghast that they can't obtain a work permit loan out to a Belgium team, that the chairman of Brighton is involved with, thereby ensuring the Belgium side still comply with local FFP Regulations.

This of course is pure speculation and is for the avoidance of doubt absolutely not the motivation for the signing of the player

I'm not in the Brexit camp but the one plus side might see more home based players getting their chance in the future?

Or easier, who knows. We could have a points system on immigration, and favour anyone who is a "professional footballer".

Or harder, where, as was being seriously debated a few years back, the FA introduce tighter regulations on the number of foreigners in each team or squad. At the time we were restricted by what we could do (I believe) due to the EU Freedom to Work Regulations.

But post-Brexit it's presumably entirely up to us. Whether that's a good thing, looking at the cretins we currently have in Westminster, well, that's to be seen.
