It all seems such a shame really, we invested so much time, if not cash, in not only signing Percy Tau, but then loaning him out to a club in Belgium for a couple of years, whilst we waited for him to be garnted a work permit before he could enter the country.

Then just a single season later, with seemingly very few chances to show his worth on the pitch, he is being let go. We had few enough forward options as it was, now we have one less.


Still who am l to complain? the club knows what it's doing . . . presumably.

As much as many here poo pooed it my original summation of this was that it was purely transactional and has probably worked as intended.

Buy undervalued player with potential, loan him out - covering wages and also generating a possible fee, get him in the shop window and sell for a profit [albeit modest if amounts are to be believed] whilst at the same time boosting our global brand awareness.

Of course this is the cynical view and he could of course, once the work permit was secured, have been a diamond in the rough but ultimately that’s G Potts decision to make and he hasn’t seen enough from him to think otherwise.

I am not sure I agree. It is reported we signed him for £2.7m, most of the time he was 'here', his wages were presumably paid by the loanee clubs. We are selling for a reported €6m (which is roughly £5m).

We may may a small profit on his time here. So it has been a (possibly) self-funding signing, with minimal risk. Yes, it didn't work out for him as a first team player, but given the low risk, it was worth trying.

On top of this, buying and selling players that never actually play for the first team is a way to generate cash for the club - Man City appear to have this business model nailed.

It depends if you look at it as a business signing or football signing for the fans. Business wise you may be spot on. Football wise and fan wise pointless imo.

Definitely. We took a punt on a player and the various loan fees and final transfer fee probably covers the cost and we end up in profit on the whole deal. Smart business from the club in that sense.

I would have personally liked to have seen him at least have a run in the team to see what he can do, but GP has my trust and clearly made his mind up from training.

All three are now fit, which wasn't always the case last season. You wouldn't have expected any of those 3 to have started many matches but it is all about options, exploiting a tiring full-back or someone who is on a yellow, the ability to produce a bit of solo trickery and guile.

For squad balance I think we need to land the Japanese guy or Velasco.

We've seen what all three can do when fit, and nothing suggests they'd have any more game time than last season even if they stayed fully fit. AJ as lovely bloke as he was simply wasn't able to be consistently good enough to warrant keeping him on the wages he was on. Tau doesn't appear to have the physicality for the PL, selling him now make sense when he only has a year on his contract, especially if it turns us a small profit. Izzy simply isn't the player he was when we signed him, after being out for two years injured I'm not sure if he'll ever play the game at a high level ever again.

In losing all three we've not really lost an option that you think can turn a game if they came on, we all hoped that AJ would have been that player but he wasn't.

Tau was always likely to only be a squad player and as such would be allowed to leave if a suitable offer was made. Similar to Bernardo, Propper & Jahanbakash all could have stayed and played a small part but reducing the squad size was out aim this summer
