Always annoyed me too, I would always say "up" to London and "down" to home (it's a North/South thing surely). However, what seems to happen is that people always describe going to the capital as going "up", regardless of whether they are actualy travelling there North, South, East or West.

From Worthing I come across to Brighton, but UP to London, always.

Anyone coming from London and heading South is definitely ALWAYS heading DOWN

In newhaven the common term is "going through to Brighton". I used to live oop norf years ago and was told I was from down south but when I came home to visit I was going upto Brighton. Confusing to say the least

As a child in London in the fifties we would regularly take the Brighton Belle up to Brighton and when it was time to go home we would get it back up to London
