Might be too late in a few months time. Germany, and I also believe the US, have a simple system. For example freelancers here (think sole traders in the UK) can obtain 5k, no questions asked, after simply filling in your name and tax number. Businesses with 10 or less can do a similar thing but with a higher amount. I know people who had their money within 5 days of the system being announced. It does beg the question, why is taking so long to set up? What is there to set up beyond creating a form.

It's being run by HMRC. That's all you need to know.

This money will save my business, I can’t see we would possibly survive without it as I think lockdown for cafes , restaurants etc will be the last lifted. I’m not claiming anything else, UC, etc as I will just take what I need from the business, and pay the staff out of that.

Begs the question, why couldn't they have done similar with all small businesses?

I've spent the last hour having to explain to a maintenance guy why he's not getting any money yet.......and will then get not much. He's going to have to try to go back to work even though he shouldn't really. Not good.

I’m not entirely comfortable with the idea that I could profit by a substantial ( to me) amount from this tragedy.

Yes, business grants for those paying rates are the only scheme that's actually been set up yet.

Nothing so far re the 80% for employers or the self employed.

The situation is unprecedented, and to simply formulate and implement a suitable scheme, with at least some semblance of control (including, for example, over fraudulent applications etc) was never going to happen overnight - it's the kind of measure that would normally take a Government maybe at least a couple of years to plan and implement.

Ireland doesn't have anywhere near the density of population, London alone has twice the people of the Ireland. Ireland's land mass is 56280 times larger than London. Much less likelihood of meeting someone infected.

It's a grant so don't worry about that.

With millions of businesses facing financial oblivion, I wouldn't feel uncomfortable at all about using what is basically a tiny sum to keep yours afloat.

I think it's brilliant when all I'm doing for the most part is dish out bad news.

The Job retention scheme goes live on Monday with payments 6 days later so my staff that were furloughed at the end of March will receive their salaries on time via this scheme (they were paid in March as usual) and I received my business grant this morning so can pay rent and suppliers.
I don't see that as terrible considering the starting point of nothing in place a few weeks ago.

But the same issues exist here. Take fraudulent applications for example. For tax I’m registered with the Finanzamt (HMRC) as a freelancer. They know this from my tax code. What else would they need to pay me 5k?

Impressed/surprised: NHS staff (no surprise there though) my local Morrison's supermarket and it's staff, M&S and Poundland - I'd never shopped in Poundland before this, but it's served me so well with it's availability of anti bacterial cleaning wipes, toilet paper, soap and bleach spray, when all others failed. M&S and their staff during the panic buying were an absolute saviour too.

Crap: The UK idiot population. They're by no means in the majority in this country, but I didn't quite realise quite how many of them there were and how good at it they are too. Really good. If it were an Olympic sport, we'd dominate it like East Germany used to do with swimming, but all our athletes would be clean as a whistle as it seems to come so naturally. Far too many of them to mention on here.

It may be like no other, but this crisis like any though does reveal who people really are I think.
