There is a photo of one such family in today's Argus. Having a piercing done hurts, therefore why would anybody knowingly inflict that on, say, a ten month old child? And that's without even considering the fact that it looks shockingly RUBBISH afterwards.

Why is tattooing children illegal, but sticking 4ct Elizabeth Duke hooped earrings through their little lobes not?

I don't agree with it at all, but maybe the reason it's not illegal is that tattoos cannot be reversed, whereby a lobe will heal?

Or maybe tattoo's can be reversed? I'm not in the loop on that one!.

My wife used to do ear peircing in our beauty salon. She would not pierce anyones ears who was not old enough to ask for it. She would explain that it was painful and give them the chance to back out.
It was not surprising that after doing one ear many youngsters did not want the second one done. They were not forced.

I think it's common practice in spain to do the girls ears at birth. They usually look quite cute with little gold studs.

I think they also shove donkeys to their death from the top of churches, taunt bulls before slowly murdering them with spears, and shout filthy racial abuse at any black footballers they see playing.

Overall then, "common practise in Spain" is hardly a seal of approval.

A friend of mine runs the body piercing shop in Gardner Street.

She won't pierce anyone under the age of 16 because, she says, it's illegal to do so.

Yep, reckon this baby is just LOVING having her head gripped while a scary man in gloves fires a sharp object through her flesh.

Half the population of the world do something far more permanent and painful to their boys as babies...Not that I'm defending piercings on babies (especially not after seeing the above) but I guess its one of those things - would be hard to draw a line legally above it.

8/21/2008 UPDATE
To Whom It May Concern:
As the mother of Loren I am shocked to read many of the comments posted for this particular video. I hadn't realized that broadcasting a simple milestone in our baby's life would create such controversy.

Piercing our child's ears is simply a cosmetic enhancement. And whether or not she chooses to wear earrings when she's older, is entirely her decision. We just gave her the option and conveinence of wearing earrings at her discretion without having to recall any painful exeperience every time she wears earrings. It's not like she's going to obsess over these "little holes" in her ears when she's older. (I, myself had my ears pierce at the same age and the only time I wore earrings since was on my wedding day. I chose not to, for personal/safety reasons (loren might rip earrings off my ears).

Furthermore, it's not like we pierced her nose, naval, or any other body part, or put spikes in her ears!! Secondly, the use of a gun to pierce ears is a common practice (it's not like we did it old school with ice and a needle). We actually asked if the "ear piercers" were experienced (years+) and the procedure of having 2 ears done at simultaneously saved us the time of having to return for the 2nd ear and spared Loren a second dose of pain. We wouldn't want to put her through that again! Last but not least, she won't remember the pain and currently her ears are perfectly fine and she doesn't mind them at all.

Seriously, people, calm down, it's just ears! If ear piercing was so horrible, why would people be willing to want to do it? (this is not the only youtube video with piercings)

Ask a guy, would they have wanted to relive the pain of circumcision as an adult? similar concept. please, leave it at that.

FYI: The intention of this comment was not to offend any persons but to explain our reaction to the comments posted by the viewers. Thank you.

Surely it's the same principal as circumsizing babies, why is that not illegal?

I suppose circumcision is largely done for either religious or health reasons, whereas most people in this country who get their kids pierced are only doing it for cosmetic purposes.

Not sure why, as it looks crap IMHO, but there you go.

Hopefully you've now matured and had the sense to let them heal up?

It's still a 'hole' because every now and then i put a ear ring in my ear, to stop it closing up, but no, i never wear an ear ring anymore.
