People overlooking the difference between head coach and manager

The manager picks the team, selects the tactics, gets involved in transfer negotiations, is the victim of the unrealistic chairman's ego, and gets turfed out after 18 months for not winning the Champions League three times in two years.

The Head Coach is someone who teaches aspiring porn stars certain aspects of their craft.

But if we are going this route (and it looks like we are)
Well if Gus wins his appeal, then he will still be our manager, with Oscar as head coach. So presumably Gus will have a big say in new signings.

If Gus wins the appeal, he stills walk away but with a nice big wad of wages. That's how it will work surely.

I wasn't being serious. I didn't think the OP deserved serious answers.

Like lots of people on here, really pleased at the new appointment.

However, a lot of people on here seem to be running away with the belief that we have a new manager. Technically we haven't; it's a head coach appointment.

Now obviously there may be legal reasons for this difference (the suspension, sacking and appeal may indicate that if we were to bring in a new 'manager' Gus would be in a much stronger position for compensation), so it may be simply a cheeky way around that problem using alternative terminology.

But if we are going this route (and it looks like we are) the bulk of posts saying "who is he going to sign? Who is he going to retain?" may be pointless because this would now be the responsibility of the head of football development. Yes, OG will be involved in that process, but it won't be initiated or decided by him as a head coach. He'll play the hand he is dealt, and at best will be involved to advise and coerce potential targets by virtue of his contacts and his stature in the game, but without initiating or vetoing any player appointments (or releases).

A somewhat simplistic definition is in this article regarding what's happening at Wolves : http://www.expressandstar.com/sport... but neither you or i know what his mandate i

In my industry at least, the practice of getting rid of people you don't want by making their roles redundant, and then employing new ones in roles that are basically the same but with a different title is very common. Obviously in this case it's replacing a sacked manager, but there's no doubt the new man having a different title is an extra buffer against a constructive dismissal case.

Steve tbh I wouldn't worry too much, I appreciate who you are, however by watching what has been goin' on behind the scenes I have slightly more confidence in their ability in choosing the direction of the club..seeing as TB owns it!! we are becoming more corperate because we have to and as much as many of us hate that it is TUFF!!

OGJ - I need a big, fast, young CB who can pass the ball and won't get sent off every 10 games. Here are 3 I like "A" "B" "C"
Other bloke - Sounds good, up the road I know "D" is out of contract next summer and unlikely to stay on at Chelsea so I'll have a word. "E" might also be an option.
OGJ - Cool chat Friday then xx

Other bloke - (Friday) "A" is a no go they want 20million, "B" has injury problems but could come cheap, do you think we should risk it? "C" want's to come but will take 500k more than his value to get him from his club. "D" is keen IF not taken on, but a year away, "E" will sign tomorrow and is cheap, but might not be quick enough.......... which do you want?
OGJ - Let's save the money and not go "C" as I still need a target man. Let's get "E" in on a cheap deal, give him a year and then look to bring in "D" if it hasn't worked. If "C's" club will come down in price though I'd still rather have him!

Next week - Other bloke has done all the work, chasing, dealing etc and gives OGJ the result.......... OGJ hasn't wasted 30 hours but has been COACHING and PLANNING instead of up all bloody night on the phone to where-ever and pulling his hair out!

My first thought was definitely... 'Head Coach' for legal reasons but, on reflection, a title change is not enough. Oscar's role must be significantly different c.f. Gus' one.

He won't be back whatever the result of the appeal.

Where's the photo shot of Oscar with the scarf. Where's the shot of Oscar with TB and Barber and where's the interview where Oscar tells us how he has always dreamed of managing/coaching in England and how thrilled he is that it's with one of the biggest clubs outside the Premiership.

So now we'll get a good idea of how good Other Bloke really is ...
