[Misc] People moaning about aircraft noise at Gatwick

Much like people who live near churches moaning about the bells, why buy a house near something that annoys you? If you decide to suck up the downsides!

I am a bit confused as to why these people expect their complaints to be taken seriously, some even expecting compensation

The second runway at Gatwick has been on the cards for years.

Awaiting posts backing the protestors, I know they’ll be coming

Anyone on here live on the flight path?

Given how long Gatwick has been a major international airport I tend to agree with you. There can be very few people living in the area (if any) that were there before the airport.

Its a bit like people moving into properties next to Pubs, industrial estates etc, and then complaining about the noise.

The second runway has been on the cards for at least fifteen years or more, the only surprise is it hasn't come earlier- I haven't seen detailed proposals so I dont know if any new areas will be affected by this though-that would be slightly different if so, but as its an upgrade to existing infrastructure rather than a whole new runway, how much new areas covered should be limited

I lived in Crawley for a year.
On a Saturday night in town I was begging for some aircraft noise to drown out all the
"Leave it Sharon, he's not worth it!" and
"Are you lookin' at my bird? D'you want some?"

This was 1980, mind.

It constantly reminds me of that ‘Meddlesome Ratbag’ character in Viz. She spent a fortune on a trip to Rio during the carnival, paying extra for a sea view just so she could scream “Keep that bloody noise down!” out of the window as the parade went past.

Was watching one of the nimby’s on the news talking about how the airport is surrounded by areas of outstanding beauty and all I could think was - Crawley??!!

Well, maybe not Crawley, but there are some pretty places outwith. I do prefer the High Weald to the South Downs.

But the planes would not be landing/taking off from the High Weald per se, they would use the existing airport?

Better realigning a 2nd runway at Gatwick, than a third at Heathrow. how anyone can complain re noise at an Airport that has been there since before the 2nd World War, its a bit like moving next to a farm and complaining about the smell of the animals.

With regard to the runway, I don't know really. I know it's been on the cards for a long time. Residents in the region would have known about it.

When I first started as an apprentice aircraft engineer at LGW for BCal we would often do engine runs during the night. This would be full throttle on 1-11's. Yes they put the aircraft with mufflers at the rear of the engines to deflect the thrust/noise upwards, however you could even hear them in Horsham, a rumble in the distance, especially in the winter with thinner air. The high bypass engines on the aircraft these days are quiet as a mouse in comparison.

It would be interesting to know how many Albion fans live in the Crawley/Gatwick area. Very few I would have thought. Therefore, bollocks to the protestors.

Obviously not as busy as Gatwick, but I live a little over three miles from Cleveland Hopkins airport. It is rarely a problem.

I used to live near Oulton Park Motor Racing circuit and enjoyed people practising, as I could follow where they were depending on the engine noise. Lots of big houses nearer to the circuit and they (usually just moved from Manchester) got practice days cancelled and race days restricted. This on a circuit where racing started in 1953...

new runway is about 500m south, between the current airfield and Crawley, half of which is industrial estate the rest some fields. no doubt some rare newt and bats live in the "unspoiled" farmland.
