Think I'll go for Chisnall the independent candidate. I don't even want to be electing my police and crime commissioner. Ridiculous. What next? Do I get to vote in my Fire Chief? Head of Social Services? What about the guy/girl that runs the parking meters across Sussex? Can I vote him in as well?

I did get a letter from Ms Bourne is week, as I assume thousands of others did (unless I'm special). What she does not say is that, if elected, she'll do the job full-time. I suspect with her other interests, that she is not planning to. I for one, if we're paying £85k a year out of the public purse, want someone commited full time if the post is needed at all.

The government is gambling on Tory candidates winning most of the places on offer. There'll then be a few dozen PCCs - most of them unknowns who owe their positions to sponsorship by the Conservative Party - who will be called to a few meetings up in London to be told how to impose the government's will on their local police forces and - hey presto! - Theresa May is controlling every aspect of British policing.

Far better than the muddled complications of the existing police authorities who are a mix of local representatives and magistrates, with a disconcerting tendency to reflect the make-up of the communities that they represent.

Now most of us here have worked out what a pathetic bunch of losers have put themselves forward for this "election" and will ignore it. The election is wrong, the principle is wrong and not one single candidate is worth voting for.

There's simply not enough village level crime to justify such extravagance, nor is there that much fear of crime. In any event, rural crimes are mostly better dealt with by calling in specialist officers who are experienced in covering much wider areas than 'the village'.

I agree. There iny anywhere near enough rural crime. Cant you lot stop shagging sheep and boring on about haystacks, real ale and tractors and go out and commit some?

Not redundant, but it's very worrying when power is in the hands of just one individual.

I remember the occasion when the Sussex Police Authority was put in the position of deciding whether or not to sack the Chief Constable. That is a seriously difficult decision to take and there was serious consideration by a lot of people about what the right decision would be. If the question arose in future, the decision would be in the hands of one person. Who knows what factors would be taken into account? The outcome might rest on nothing more than whether the Chief Cop got on well with the Commissioner. There might more "accountability to the public", but that is no compensation for a potentially wrong decision.

In the end, Paul Whitehouse resigned before the Police Authority took its decision. But the politicking before he decided to go left an unpleasant taste in the mouth. Once we have an elected Commissioner in post, this sort of thing can only get worse.
