Will always remember the euphoria of the early Liam Brady days.
About a month into his reign, in early 1994 and things are starting to turn around, but we were having a 'mare against plucky Bournemouth, losing 1-3 going into the 89th minute.
Up pops Chappers with a 30 yard thunderbolt to reduce the arrears, and just a few minutes later, cue a North Stand tremor when Macca powers home a headed equaliser. Scenes!
Awful, awful news, and a real downer on a day that - what with the Goldstone 20th bash - was all about memories. Safe to say we'll be doing something in at least one of the forthcoming match programmes about Paul. As so many others on here have said, a real BHA stalwart at a time when there wasn't always much to cheer. RIP Mac.
Remember him well too..RIP Paul and thanks for the memories. The goal he scored against Bournemouth in front of the North stand is one of my favorite Goals at the old ground...mental celebrations. Wish there was video of that somewhere.
The previous comments reflect how I feel also, such a tragedy for him and his loved ones. I have plenty of memories, one of my all time favourite players.
I'm sure the club, and the fans, will show their own marks of respect on Saturday.
Desperately sad news and condolences to Paul's family and all who knew him. My Dad and I were only talking about him last week - 45 is no age.
Many memories of him and Fozzie playing together in the early days, and then Paul taking over the Senior Pro mantle. He left under great terms as well, and we always kept an eye out for him at Wycombe.
I remember him as a terrifically whole-hearted defender who seemed to specialise in blocking shots and getting his head in among the flying boots, when players had rather less protection.
Finding it quite hard to get my head around this news, as he was from a previous Goldstone era, but I was amazed to see he is 8 years younger than me. Sobering.
Condolences to his family, RIP Paul McCarthy, forever a Seagull.
Turned up at one of my girls cricket matches 6 or 7 years ago and noticed a familiar face doing the scoring. Went up to the bloke and said "you're Paul McCarthy aren't you?" to which he he replied "Jesus, no one's ever noticed me before as a footballer."
We spent a lovely afternoon watching the girls play and shared many stories of the Albion and football in general. He was a really smashing bloke. Devastating for his family - his daughter must be 15 like mine.
PS. Be very aware of sudden onset back pain. Can be a symptom of a bleed.
Very shocking and hard to believe. Plenty of fond memories but for some reason the one that sticks in my head is the performance at Anfield circa:1991. I think he won the penalty?
