There was an amazing C4 or BBC series on about 10 years ago, showing beautiful films of France in about 1910 to 1913. A Friese-Greene type character had filmed beautiful countryside, villages, towns and cities in regions such as Picardy, Champagne, Lorraine and Ardennes. Stunning scenery, dense forests, ancient architecture and old Gallic ways of life.
The poignancy was that within a couple of years, most had been turned to ashes and tree stumps by The Great War.
Back on the good old days, there were always three classes for everything, first (here, fast), second (slow) and third (walking). Not only that, everybody Knew Their Place.
