Great stuff.
In the interests of reciprocity bicycles, mopeds and motorbikes should be banned for a day also so car users can travel around unhindered and not be held up by twits who think they own the road

Somewhat tongue in cheek, I dare say, but nevertheless it did make me chuckle.
Unlike some of the more 'Po-faced' on here who take themselves too seriously.:lolol:

So you basically make city centres on that day inaccessable for the the less abled. Nice. Therefore it's a no from me.

From last years, Paris car free day:-
https://www.independent.co.uk/news/...an-day-pollution-climate-change-a7981196.html

But Ms Hidalgo, whose term ends in 2020, says she does not want to ban cars from the city completely but pointed out that only one in ten commuters travel to work by car.

She said: “We are changing the model of mobility. By offering alternatives, we can do without a personal car. That's my goal.”

The city was not entirely shut down to cars as special vehicles such as ambulances and taxis were still allowed on the streets and the surrounding suburbs were unaffected.

Residents who have a genuine emergency or are elderly or disabled can travel by car but were asked to stick to the 20mph speed limit in place.

So I take it you're now all in?

Just as long as taxis, buses and those with special dispensation such as Blue Badges ( like my Mum has ) then yes - I'm in support. It's taken years to get organisations to account for the less able and any 'campaign' that would stop my Mum from entering the city when she felt like it would be a no from me.

So we've moved away from your wife's shoe choice to a more empathetic resistance.

Although Paris closed off 40 square miles of roads, thus making taxis more necessary.
I'm not too sure it would be quite so prominent for just a couple of roads in Brighton, with the buses running.

I've paid very little attention to ebikes, for obvious reasons, but I just read this review with this thread in mind.

I was still of the impression that ebikes were still big bulky cumbersome things.
By the time these roadworks are finished this bike will be half the price, the technology will be twice as good, available through most/all manufacturers and cycling to the AMEX a piece of wee-wee.

The only comparison I have to this bike is having previously ridden a belt-drive bike, that is so so smooth.

As I was leaving this morning, one of these crossed my drive.

I think I freaked the poor cyclist out, as I tailgated him along 2 roads, in order to give his bike a good look over.
It appeared to be a very very tidy piece of kit

There's no ban on mobility scooters.

Mores the pity.

I'd much rather have HGV's going through the village than the current squadrons of mobility scooters terrorising everybody. :lo

And their only purpose seems to be transporting obese council estate scum to the Lottery and fag counter .

Not in my village, they are there solely for the purpose of giving blind elderly people a sense of freedom.

so you say im small minded for daring to suggest we should do something more. i dont get it really, people ask for radical solutions to big problems then applaud small feel good events. well done some people switched to bikes, small steps by individuals are great. i expect government to try something grander but they dont need to when we are so easily pleased.

all i said was it was a bit of gimmick and wonder if they want to do more. i get abuse. wierd crowd.
Not really. You did what you always do - just rubbish a small idea, calling it "grandstanding" without actually offering an alternative. More to the point, Stat Brother gave you a clear example of a small win from one of these events, yet you're just scoffing at it.

If you don't like "abuse" (really?), how about you, you know, make a point?

Not every less able person has the access or ability to use a mobility scooter. Regardless, I agree with the principle of the day ..... just as long as it doesn't exclude people. Something SB seems to have ignored.

I'm assuming you mean they want cities to join in? Us country folk would be stuffed. There's no way I'm walking to work and back when I've got a perfectly serviceable car on the drive :D

Ah, I see we have disablists here. Oh well.

The days without cars are only really going to work well, where there are lots of public transport, as not everyone has the ability to cycle to work.

I very much see you as the Mary Whitehouse of NSC. She was a prudish old sourpuss too.
Disablist? No dear, I myself am disabled and spent all of junior school in a specialist school to help me overcome my physical problems. Go back and start again.

My mother has MS and she is a t**king liability on her scooter.

Nice to see progressive ideas bringing the good folk of NSC together.

Always the best place to find the downside of everything. One thing is for sure, many people are going to take a long time to change their ingrained behaviours.

How many people currently drive to work in a 1-2 sq mile section of Brighton, on one Sunday, in the summer?
Why does 'car free' instantly mean 'must cycle?'

As BadFish says progressive thinking really is pointless on NSC.
